Title: Book discussion thread.
Post by: Mikefrompluto on November 24, 2013, 11:09:34 PM
I recently got back into reading regularly, and I've seen some discussion about books pop up, so I'm making a thread for book discussion. Talk about opinions on certain books, seek/give recommendations, tell what you're currently reading, etc. Have fun.

I started Hyperion by Dan Simmons today. I'm a quarter of the way through it and it's started to pick up. It starts off kind of slow but I'm enjoying it so far.

I pretty much only read MTG or Warhammer 40k, more specifically the Horus Heresy books.

I would highly recommend reading the artifacts cycle to learn how MTG really came to be in the fluff world.

Second would be the Ice Age cycle. This set is by far my favorite cycle in the books. And I've read a lot.

I've been reading a lot of Chuck Palahnuik and Neil Gaiman lately. I'm currently reading The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice, so far so good.

I started Catching Fire a few days ago. I like this world, the plot, and the characters but I'm not the target audience and the love triangle feels kind of rehashed from other young adult novels.

Though I haven't read this series recently I'm dying for the new Name of the Wind book in 2014. If you haven't read Patrick Rothfus' books DO.

Ted Dekker, Frank Peretti, Christopher Paolini, and of course Tolkein are my favorite authors. Currently reading The Oath by Peretti, might reread Paolini's Inheritance series next, it was great the first time through. :)

Not a reader but of the dozen or so books I have read, I absolutely fell in love with the Halo series.  I love the games and all, but the books are 10x better and I hate to read!

We just saw the movie. It was fantastic. I tried to read The Hunger Games a few years ago and couldn't get into it. I may try to again after I finish Hyperion.

I was the exact opposite, as soon as I started reading them...I was hooked. Finished the first two in one day >_<

Young adult novels are kinda a guilty pleasure for me. Maximum Ride, the hunger games, his dark materials, the warriors, red wall, all that and more get me hooked easily haha.

I would probably enjoy it this go-around since I rediscovered my love of reading. When I first tried to read it, I was more occupied with other things.

Ah, yes! That collection of gritty, gory, sci-fi short stories was amazing! I have a few of them myself.

Finally got around to reading The Walking Dead #116 and #117. Very excellent. Also read Joe Hill's short story Twittering from the Circus of the Dead, a zombie story told through Tweets. It's on Amazon for $0.99 if anyone is interested.

I love The Walking Dead comics, they are much more brutal than the show, I'm excited to see how much more the show involves more story concepts from the comics. I've finished all of my cooking and baking for the day. I'm taking a break and reading Reading Lolita in Tehran. :)

Wasn't that movie spot on? I was entertained by the first one but it wasn't as gripping as the book. This second film might have been better than the book...

... There are some things that I have heard very few people do that I wouldn't consider to be "inventive and unique". And I've never been a fan of digital social media used as a means of telling a story... Especially not one that limits you to 140 characters... I think an inventive and unique story written and published as a novel would have just made more sense. Maybe I just don't like twitter... Oh well...

The second film was so good. A lot of people I know complained about there not being enough time shown in the arena, but that's what the first film was for. I would've been mad if the second film was two and a half hours of them in the arena. I'm glad it didnt hover on that part of the story for too long.

Well yeah, if you don't like Twitter then you more than likely won't "get it." It makes total sense for Joe Hill to be the one to do this. He's a strong advocate of Twitter. Anyway, it was an enjoyable 30 minute read that I recommend. If you don't see the value in it then don't read it I guess? I don't know what else to say.

I like "young adult" novels too! I just finished the latest Percy Jackson book, "House of Hades". Man those books are awesome! I was hooked ever since Percy stumbled into Camp Half Blood after taking out that Minotaur.

I also like the Divergent series. The third one just came out and it's next on my reading list! Thr3e was amazing (much better than the movie...WAY more suspenseful). Prey was awesome too. I started the Inheritance books but stopped after Eldest. Eragon wasn't the best writing. I could tell it was inspired by the LOTR trilogy, and I liked the idea, but it just got kind of dull. However in his defense, he starting writing the first one when he was like 17. And also the books get better as you go. I have not read the final book but. I have heard it's the best one and worth the read.

I also enjoy Tolkein's work. The LOTR trilogy was great (if you can get through the chapter "The Council of Elrond" haha), but I gotta say, my favorite from him was The Hobbit. Such a great book full of adventure! I have heard that Tolkein's science fiction books are good, though I haven't read any myself. I also love love LOVE The Silmarilion. Though don't try reading it if you aren't a crazy Tolkein fan! The Children of Hurin is a great book. I think it was written by Christopher Tolkein, either that or JRR and edited by his son Christopher.

I'm also a big manga fan. I read the entire DBZ series, which was fun. I read the Dragon Ball series too, which is kind of like DBZ only less fighting and more crude jokes. Not as good but a must read for any DBZ fan! I read Bleach for a long time and enjoyed it, but it got so repetitive that I stopped. Ichigo gains powers. Ichigo loses powers. Rinse and repeat while enemies get stronger according to Ichigo's power level. Gets boring after a while.

you and I share some tastes, my friend. :) personally I felt the same way about the Inheritance series but I finished them off and they really do get better and better as you go on. I always love that part where he punched through that guy's chest... Ah, good times...

I have read The Night Angel series by Brent Weeks through a trillion tines. Such a good fantasy series! It has everything I'm after: assassins, ninjas, magic, massive twists, multithread stories linking into one after a huge set up, fleshy characters, ah! Amazing!

I'm now chugging my way through The Clockwork Century series by Cherie Priest. An awesome does of zombie airship steampunk love.

And Terry Pratchett. Nuff said, really.

But sooooooooo worth it! Trust, do it! The more Discworld you read, the better it gets! Mainly due to his persistent cross title appearances! Like at times, you won't realize till half way through that the plot of this book was referred to in passing as a rumour or wives tale in another. Or the person they're describing sitting across the bar was the main from the last book. Or you're seeing an event described from another angle. Or Death just walks in a makes everything better!

Yeah I plan to read it all eventually. I actually may finish out Colour of Magic and start on The Light Fantastic after I finish Hyperion. I really enjoy the humor Pratchett puts into his stuff. It's a nice break from the super serious SFF I'm used to reading.

Thats exactly why I love him too. The way he manipulates sentence structure and grammar to emulate the humor or setting of the scenario; amazing! The description of that suit case in Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic is the best!

Finished Hyperion. Mildly annoyed at the ending. It ends with no resolution and you have to read the next book to find out what happens with the pilgrimage. I honestly probably never would've read it had I known that. My To Read is too massive to be reading any two part books right now. Also read Thumbprint, another short story by Joe Hill. It was forgettable but only took 45 minutes to read so I'm not too disappointed with it. About to start The Strain.

1/4th of the way through The Strain and I had to abandon it. It was so boring, and from the reviews I've read, it sounds like it doesn't pick up. I may finish it eventually but now is not its time. Starting Lord of Light tonight.

I read the 7 Dark Tower books by Stephen King and I havnt read anything since as I'm convinced I'll finish another book and be like "meh, wasn't as good" those books have ruined my reading they're so amazing!
On the up side I got the Game of Thrones books and I'm going to start ploughing into them soon.

I've been listening to the audio book version of A Game of Thrones. It's fantastic. I'm going to read the rest of the series when I finish listening to this one.

Once you hit E5, you become eligible for next rank 3 years later, unless you're an early candidate... I need to make E6, but I probably won't have a shot for another year and half, and I've been eligible for the past 3 years

It's about the same then... test for E-5 in Jan, make first time but find out in August, line number equals next august before u sew on, so don't test that year, can't test the firat year u put on so miss another year, then finally scheduled..... Test E-6 blah blah blah. I feel your pain. Sucks u cant test if your eligible though: the AF is a lot different, if your eligible, unless your in bad trouble, you test no matter what.

After abandoning two books due to being boring (read 1/4 of The Straun and 1/4 of Lord of Light and bailed,) I'm happy to be reading something that holds my interest. The Fall of Hyperion. I didnt plan on reading the second book after I read a few others first, but I started the first few pages and couldn't stop.

Also read Swamp Thing #26 today. Kinda meh. Swamp Thing Annual #2 is going to be hard to top. I'm loving this DC reboot via The New 52.

Wow, that sounded a little selfish :-/

I got new prints of the books and there's a few pages at the beginning about how he was inspired to write the books. He says in it about how after he got hit by the car he got loads of letters saying "can you finish the series incase you almost die again?" And "do you know how selfish you would be if you died before you finished the books"

Update on my progress. Finished The Fall of Hyperion. It was fantastic. Halfway through Endymion, the third book in the Hyperion Cantos, and it is not that good. It takes place 275 years after the second book and has completely new characters. I will stick with it, however, adn probably read the final book as well.

I've also been listening to audiobooks more frequently at work. Listened to Rise of the Governor and Road to Woodbury. I tried to read Rise of the Governor months ago but the writing was atrocious. The audiobooks are way better because the narrator is really good at his job. Also listened to The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. Nigel Planer is a really good narrator and does a great job of brining characters to life.

I am currently, attempting to, read the Hunger Games series... I won't say it's a bad book by any means because it describes scenes well and goes over so much more things in the book vs movie aspect. Yet, I cannot get over how it's 'narrated' by Katniss and everything is seen from her perspective only. I love learning about characters and backstory of characters, because I am a lore nerd. I must know everything about that character. Since you only learn personal things about Katniss because you are reading from her view only things are a bit skewed and it makes it hard for me to read it.

On the other hand, I got Ted Dekker's new book "Outlaw" and will be reading that after I get "Diablo: The Sin War" finished.

LotR.

All ye lore-hunters, feast your heart on the epics of Tolkien. Start with Lord of the Rings, tread through the Hobbit, move with the stories of Hurin and Turin. Yearn for adventure, be amazed. Embark on a journey of a lifetime.

Looking for Alaska is the funniest thing I've ever read. Pages 126-128 especially sensual.

Eff yeah nerdfighters!

I <3 John Green.

In keeping with the thread, I'm currently reading Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman and If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino, and I've read a ton of books since I last posted here.

Gaiman is one of my favorite authors ever. You really must read American Gods if you haven't already. It's a "prequel" (in the loosest sense) to AB and one of my top 5 books ever.

Yeah the edition of Anansi I have also has American Gods with it. I'm going to read it next for sure. I've been a fan of his comics for a whole but never read his novels until I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane a few months ago.

Have you heard American Gods is being adapted for TV and Gaiman is helping write it? Joseph Gordon Levitt also has the rights to make a Sandman movie.

A couple books up my arsenal.

Anyone's thoughts on Ender's Game trilogy.  I've been meaning to read it, but haven't quite gotten around to it.

The Count of Monte Cristo (I believe that is the title).heard very good things and very bad things, wanted to hear your opinion.

Ender's Game is worth reading solely for the sequel, Speaker for the Dead, a better read. I haven't read the other two books in the series but I plan to. Ender's Shadow is also really good, which is a parallel story to Ender's Game.

I love speaker for the dead. All time favorite book. I haven't read it in a long time though, so I guess it's time for a reread.

Hmm, managed to miss this thread somehow.  I've been reading the hell out of the old school Resident Evil books.  Not the best, but still pretty good.  Entertaining, to say the least.  Outside of that I have been reading some of the MtG books.  They seem really hit or miss.  The planeswalker cycle was decent, Alara Unbroken was horrible, and I can't find the Zendikar novel anywhere for a reasonable price, especially considering I haven't seen a single good review for it.  Definitely wanting to go back and read some of the older novels.  To be honest, though, everything is just filler while I wait for the next Dresden Files.  By far my favorite series.  Now hurry the hell up, Butcher!  It's been forever!

I had heard AG was being looked at. He just recently wrapped a BBC radio production if Neverwhere that I hope to hear one day. Didn't know about the Sandman movie however.

Also Ocean at the End of the Lane was a great book. I haven't read a bad book my Gaiman yet.

Alexander Dumas is another favorite of mine, likely my favorite classical writer. You have the title right, and the book is a quick easy read. If you like it check out the Three Musketeers trilogy.

For the record I used to read a TON but the dreaded work has recently destroyed all my free time lately.

Nothings changed.

But I've also remembered a book I read once for uni called The Immoralist and another called The Outsider. Both blew my mind back then and am too frightened to reread them now with my maturer more literary analytical brain in case I ruin it for myself.

But still, dat Brent Weeks!
