Title: US History
Post by: Mattao19 on November 24, 2013, 08:25:27 PM
As a Canadian I know a little about US History. But now I need to write about the 1807 abolition of the slave trade in the US.

I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge on this topic to help me?

No it's not. The civil war didn't even begun till 1862 I believe. I may be a couple years off I'm a little rusty. The secession of the south from the United States causes the civil war.

Just trying to figure out different reactions to the Act and why they created the Act without any regard for the current slaves

To be more specific, the import of new slaves from Africa was prohibited in 1807/1808. However, the slave trade was still prevalent within the US, especially with Eli Whitney's cotton gin demanding more workers to handle increased production. The slavery issue began gaining serious momentum around this time, coninciding with Madison's presidency. It eventually culminated in the Civil War (or politically correct War Between the States - whatever) which was from 1861 to 1865.

That's all I got. Good luck with your research and may Google treat you kindly!

Hate to say it but most Americans don't know much about their history

Most Americans know things? But that would require a brain.
(No offense meant to anyone, but just so you know, I'm American. I'm just insanely disappointed with the collective that's supposedly my generation.)

Also, some other interesting tidbits about slavery. The first official slave owner in the area now known as the US was a black man. Also, over half the slaves in US were white. Lincoln's Emacipation Proclamation only referenced that the slaves in the South to be freed, but not the ones in the North.

What exactly makes this generation worse than any if the past few?

In its own topic? Don't see why not, as long as people are interested in talking about it, go for it! I'd be happy to weigh my opinions in when I'm not drugged up on cough medicine lol

From my perspective? A lot. Like Gorzo said, it's probably a whole other topic. For one thing, I didn't leave high school before seeing like 10+ different girls that got pregnant and had to drop out. But then, that's just off the top of my head. And I'm about to leave to go visit family, so there are other things on my mind. =P
