Title: Unexpected Win
Post by: Deebiia on November 22, 2013, 09:25:13 AM
My question is have you ever won a match unexpectedly, if so how?

Mine was when I was playing my "Big Arse Elf" deck and had a ton of elf tokens out. Opponent drops {Gideon, Champion of Justice} and +1's him. My turn I attacked, he {Fog}ged the attack and on his turn -15'd him... And ended. Me having nowhere to go now I played a land and ended. The merciful, or stupid, opponent let me live a couple turns to give me a chance. So all I draw the next couple turns are lands... I'm freaking out saying "Just kill me!" He laughed and said "Nah, Im having fun!" So my turn I draw {Avarice totem}.. I fake sigh, play a land, having 6 mana now. I play the totem and end. His turn, he 0's Gideon and my response was to swap the totem and Gideon. He didn't have enough mana to swap back, my turn I 0 Gideon and swing for 47. Win.

I haven't had any games like that, but I've had really close mirror matches with my UWR control deck.

That's awesome. I had a close match like that. I'm at five life opponent swings at me for nine I {Azorius Charm} to draw a card. I hit {Sphinx's Revelation} cast for six and survive the barrage with two life. Draw on my upkeep and get a {Supreme Verdict} I cast and wipe his board play a land pass. He drops a hasty I sphinx again for five hit an {AEtherling} he passes. I drop the {Aetherling} and pass. Swings again I charm it away. My turn pump {AEtherling} and swing. And he scooped after that haha

I have all of those cards in my UWR list. Don't assume Esper just because control and UW.

It is still a very Esper thing that would likely be in Esper. Do not assume I assumed it was Esper just because control and WU ;)

I love {Riot Control}. I had it in my UW list before I switched to UWR.

it was riot control with a double activation of  {Vizkopa Guildmage}'s damage ability.

I played a game with my friend. I was running artifacts and he was playing boros. I was at 1 life and he had a final level {figure of destiny}.
I had a {steel overseer} and using tezzeret and voltaic key I was able to get enough counters on my creatures to win (he had only one blocker and I had 4 other creatures.

I had an unexpected win at the theros prerelease. I was playing wr agro, and had been drawing no creature the whole game. I kept taking damage until I was down to 1, and my opponent still had 20. Then I drew something with double white in its cost, maybe a wingsteed rider? And a evangel of Heliod. I was able to come back and win because he didn't draw any more creatures. It was awesome :)

In an edh game Kaalia (me) vs (Karn) my opponent played at {blightsteel colossus} was able to give it double strike but it came in tapped because if a card my team mate had played. We had no blockers after our last assault. Next turn I drew into a {reforge the soul} and drew it. {Hellkite Tyrant} I totally forgot I had it in my deck. I played with Kaalias ability the dragons ability triggers and I steel 25 some artifacts win next upkeep

Two weeks ago my friends and I were playing a two-headed giant commander game. My {derevi, empyrial tachtician} and my teammate's {damia, sage of stone} vs our friends' {uril the miststalker} and {chrosis the purger}. We were one 14/14 unblockable uril swing from losing and we decided to analyze the battlefield for any glimpse of hope. We had a monstruous {colossus of akroas} on my teammate's side and  derevi, {isperia supreme judge}, some fliers and {rubinia soulsinger} on mine. My friend with the Uril deck had only it on the battlefield but she could create saproling tokens with a land and my Chrosis friend had a {butcher of malakir}. We didn't have anything to dispose of Uril, i had {rite of replication} and {curse of the swine} in my hand. My teammate didn't have anything relevant in his hand until we noticed he had a land that destroyed lands (can't remember the name) and I had a {faerie conclave} in play with a total of 5 available mana from {azorius chancery}, {selesnya sanctuary} and an island. I tapped rubinia to steal the butcher, cast rite of replication on the butcher, swung with derevi and the fliers for a direct hit untapping my azorius chancery, then I activated the faerie conclave's ability turning it into a creature in addition to being a land, my teammate destroying it triggering the butchers' ability and causing uril's controller to sacrifice it and being unable to save it with a saproling token due to the second butcher, uril was gone. Their turn, my friend casts uril again but without the enchantment that gave it protection from creatures we dgaf about him. My chrosis friend just cast and swung with him (he had anger in graveyard) for 6 but we were at 16 life so whatever 6 commander damage from chrosis. Then my uril friend exiled my rubinia, returning my chrosis friend's butcher to him. Our turn I cast curse of the swine on chrosis and the butcher and we swing with everything and win.

That was probably the longest and hardest turn I've ever played.

Had another unexpected win this last weekend.
I had {Blood Artist}, {Falkenrath Noble}, {Soul Warden}, and {Viscera Seer} in play. Two {Oppression}'s on the board (the player with the oppressions died off pretty fast), one opponent plays {Lifeline} (at the time I wasn't sure how it worked). {Mogg Fanatic} comes into play and starts killin people off because of lifeline. I'm gaining life too fast for the opponent to kill me, but I asked if lifeline worked on my creatures.. Yup! I sac'd Soul Warden and Viscera Seer over and over and got the win.

Not too amazing, but I now wanna add 2-3 lifelines to my deck now.
