After discussion with another regular poster, we have come up with a suggestion.
We feel the ability to distribute karma should not be engaged at 100 posts, any kid can troll 100 posts in 10 minutes if that's their goal.
Our suggestion instead is that karma dealing should be reserved for those who already have karma of a set number or have been a member for over a year.
Something along these lines would prevent inactive lurkers from trolling someone's karma or another new person inflating their own karma with multiple profiles artificially creating a positive looking profile.
Though this is in no way thought all the way through it is instead meant to encourage discussion about how people feel about the karma system and what might be a positive change that could be made.
I am very much in favor of this idea.
I agree with this. I don't think that people who have spent enough timeon this forum posting well thought out ideas in order to get there Karma up to about 15, 20, or whatever the magic number would be, would purpsely troll to lower someone elses karma.
Some interesting points.
While a whole year seems long, I can see the benefit of needing to be a member for a certain amount of time before karma activates. As for a karma threshold, we mods have been discussing that with Piotr already.
I'm going to try to speak for the team, which I hate doing, so someone please tell me to shut my face if you disagree with this part :P
We also don't want to discourage members, no matter how new they happen to be, from being able to express their opinions. The 100 post requirement is necessary, to weed out accounts made just for karma and such, but restricting it further would likely just stifle real people's freedom of expression more than it would stop any trolling. The same applies for a karma threshold (punishing new users for starting at 0 and even dipping to negatives as they often do at first seems very unfair)
Now, speaking for myself again, as a moderator with access to the karma log info, I can say it's very interesting to browse those logs. I don't see much trolling, I'm happy to say, but I notice that many of the -karma hits are pretty weird. No preventative measure is going to stop people from being strange, and the ends wouldn't justify the means of disallowing some people their ability to express themselves.
I vote 10+ kar and 1 moth of activity to modify karma.

It's ok Mlerner. They probably just seen a necro you bumped... Hahah. We still love love you. Just keep on rockin on! You crack me up.
And this why I'm in favor of a new system, or just 86 the Karma altogether. It's not right for people to be able to just dip in an neg someone for absolutely nothing. And not only that, but he/she can do it WITHOUT the responsibility of having to own up for the neg (since the giver of Karma is anonymous).
If it weren't anonymous, it'd be full of spite-hits and backlash. "Neg me for no reason? Jerk, I'll neg you for no reason!" And then it loops back and forth and both of those users hate each other. The anonymity is there to protect people.
I'm not saying it's perfect, and I agree that that the system could use some serious improvements. But I don't want to punish the legit new users because of a few idiots abusing a privilege. I don't want to see a few bad apples spoil anything for this really great bunch.

I get why it has to be anonymous; but it takes away all accountability for those who choose to neg just because they feel like it. I'm just stating the fact that it's obnoxious.

Thanks buddy, nice to know some people appreciate me :)
I also think that in the top corner if a post you should be able to see how many negs and likes a list has gotten. Like this:
Post left side with user
User karma

Was that clear enough? I'm tired :-\
I think the karma system is fine. There's an implemented lockdown for people that are -5 and below, and as you can see with Mlerner in this very thread, karma has a way of working itself out. I.E. someone is unfustifiably -'d and someone +'s it to even it out.
Remember: karma is yours to give or take. If you -1 someone for no reason, it'll come back to you. If someone is abusing karma (multiple -1 hits towards the same person or -1 every comment in any given thread [it happens,]) then a mod will step in.

-5 and below can't modify karma?
They can + but can't -

Yep. And I, for one, don't want to see an airing of grievances (unless it's Festivus) in public. This is a Magic forum, after all. Not Facebook.
As it's been stated, mods can view who gives and takes karma, and if any karma trolling occurs, we work to reverse it. But it has been some time now since a situation like that has taken place.
As far as the karma system in general goes, I think it's great. Recieving feedback from the forum on that level is invaluable to me. It's a code of sorts, letting us know what is or is not acceptable/helpful/factual in the eyes of other members. I like it a lot. 👍

I like this one, maybe the threads should be in the order of that. A new post starts with some positive to be seen, but that wears of over time, only the liked ones will survive

I asked for this a while back, Piotr said it was on his ToDo. But it is a great idea :P
