Title: Favorite Card Artists
Post by: Steerpike on November 17, 2013, 02:31:31 PM
How many of you pay attention to the artists credited at the bottom of your magic cards?
Are there some in particular that you would consider yourself a fan of above the rest?

For this thread, post AT LEAST 3 cards by the same artist and explain why you're so fond of their style :D (the gatherer website will let you search by artist)

Mine is probably Brom:
{Mageta the Lion}
{Aboroth}
{Phyrexian Splicer}
Brom's art does not fall in line with the art direction of recent blocks that are very finely and crisply rendered. His (I assume Brom is a male pseudonym) more archaic style of artwork is the kind of thing that attracted me to magic in the first place. Most of his art appears old and sort of carries an authority because of it. My mind's eye pictures stories from mythologies in that kind of way and it just prompts me to recognize the grandeur of some of these planes.
Brom appears to really like neutral colors. If it's not black, white, or somewhere in between, it's a faded sort of heavy, earthy color. Much less bright and shiny than recent years of Magic art.

I think Steve Argyle has some nice work
{Deathrite Shaman}
{Flames of the Firebrand}
{Lavalanche}
{Liliana of the Veil}
I think his art does a really good job of depicting the card and the art for {Deathrite Shaman} is just amazing.

I like Ray Swanland (see: {Arid Mesa} {Vengevine} and GTC {Watery Grave}) along with a lot of the other big mtg artists. Avon, Staples, Argyle, Alexander et al.

I wish we could actually see emrakul do something. We just see him floating there. I wish we could see him ravage a landscape or something

Yeah, I edited him out for more recent artists but he was amazing, {sol'kanar the swamp king} and {daikon blackblade} were favorites back in the day

I have a goal to collect all the cards with his artwork...
unfortunately, some are quite high if i recall correctly :(

Raymond Swanland, John Avon, and Noah Bradley. Almost all the basics by Noah Bradley are awesome (favorite plains ever, m13).

I'm honestly a huge fan of Jason Chan.

We all love him of course for {Jace, the Mind Sculptor}, but if you look at his others I think they are far superior.
{Apocalypse Hydra}
{Battle of Wits} (m13 version)
{Iona, Shield of Emeria}

He would have to be my favorite.

Greg Staples has to be my favorite.

The most recent art for {Diabolic Tutor} (that face is so perfect and crazy-eyed), and the modern {Serra Angel} is his work as well (gorgeous artwork).

He's also responsible for artwork on big names like {Divinity of Pride}, {Baneslayer Angel}, {Captain of the Watch}, {Hellcarver Demon}... All amazing art.

Honorable mentions to Jason Chan and Steve Argyle, who also put out beautiful cards one after another. Another mention for Scott Chou, just for {Emancipation Angel} - the most gorgeous angel artwork in mtg (in my opinion).
