Title: Children and magic
Post by: Ertai on November 07, 2013, 01:58:38 PM
I'm sure this has been done already, but I could not find it.

So, if you're a parent and you play MTG, would you like to see your children play with you or beside you?

I personally let my son come to my shop with me to open up. (As long as it wasn't a school day). I want to see him succeed as much as possible and follow in my footsteps.

I've played for many years and did all kinds of great tournaments in the 90's and early 2000's that involved some big money. Sure I had my successes and my disappointments, but through the years my son has watched me and strove to be like me. I know this isn't typical, because I'm not some police hero or firefighter, I may have been in the army for a couple years, but by no means demanded respect.

If any other parent out there feels that their children may follow in their footsteps with MTG, I would love to hear about it!

I'm a kid and want my parents to play with me, but they say it's "stupid" and "they have better things to do with their time" :(

So, as a kid, you feel it would be nice to have a parent who you can play with and someday surpass in skill and knowledge?  Is that what I'm sensing? Or just putting words in your mouth. Haha

I'm 20 but I still think that it's be sick if my parents played like I've moved out and I'm at college but I think that it'd awesome if they played bc Magic is (IMO) just a better board game in a way. And some of my best childhood memories were Family Game Night with my brother and parents so I think that an EDH Game Night would be the best thing ever. Just spending time with the people you love playing a fun game what more can you ask for?

Of course the pride as the parent is telling you to always beat your child in games, but someday! Haha

Imthelolrus and I have an almost 3 year old and we are hoping he shows interest in learning how to play in a few years! I think it would be an awesome hobby for the three of us to share! :)

Exactly how sick would it be to have an EDH night with your kid?

Lol maybe have all 3 decks Bant Group Hug?

This is exactly what I'm talking about!!!

What if I had octuplets and had a multiplayer night?!?  I could even have my own family tourney. Hah

My dad started playing with my brother and I in '95, and though he wasn't the best player he was incredibly creative with ideas on decks for us to build. Sure, he was busy almost all the time in the medical field and has to work long hours, but as an adult now I still remember a game we played that we each built a 300 card deck and started with 100 life, we started playing at 10 pm and went right through day light savings times (add an hour to play due to playing thought the hour twice) and it ended at 4 am.

I hope on day my daughters will want to play the game if for no other reason than to help with their mental acuity and memory skills as it did for me.

That sounds EPIC!!!! Any {Battle of Wits}

Also Ertai, with octuplets you can host your own draft Lmfao

Great ideas guys!! I've heard some really good stories!

I never got to play with my parents, but I grew up at a summer camp every year for 10 years. This is where I first learned how to play. I played all the time here.

All I remember is having over nights at the camp where we went swimming, jumped over a fence into a golf course at night and went to a graveyard. Then came back and having a magic tourney. This camp was amazing. Haha

I'm hoping my son and daughter get that chance as well.

Though I don't know if I want them to play this T2 stuff. It's very strange. Haha

Old T2 was fun, but it's obviously changed.

T1.5 is great as well as modern. That's pretty much all I play.

I will probably teach my son more T1.5 because that's where the real strategy is IMO. Lol

I'm 19, but I wish my dad had the time to sit down and learn magic. He's bought me cards and stuff before and he supports the fact that I play the game, even tells me good luck on Fridays, lol. I'd love if when I have kids they're interested in the game and want me to teach them, though.

Surprisingly I haven't told my parents that I play lol not that they would mind but its just an extra thrill to sneak around to play lol

I kept it a secret from my mom for the longest time, but not because she's a flaming super Christian and thinks bs like each individual card has a demon on it or something... Needless to say, I had no childhood because of her, otherwise I would have started playing magic a whole lot sooner.

I just want to scoop you up and play tons of magic or something! Just to make up for your childhood!!  If you're close to Reno Nevada, and you need some magic cards, come see me.

I got my 8 year old into playing, and take him to Fnm. He always goes at least 2-2, and people enjoy having him there.

This is what I like to see.

I've seen children at fnm before, but they're usually snobby brats while their parents are out doing something else. If you can find a good player, that's awesome, but if he or she is a child then that adds to the amazement.

I used to play when I was about 10, which is when I started so I can relate. This is why I feel it's nice to get them into it now so when they're older they are well versed. That is to say they stick with it over the years.

Lol thanks. xD unfortunately I live all the way in Northern North Carolina, otherwise I'd come over. =P We can play some wall games if you like, though? And I'm always up for online trades lol.

Unfortunately I only trade sets. (It's a security thing) also, I'm not too familiar with wall games, but I was checking them out. Sounds kind of fun, and sounds like a tourney of wall games is in order. Has that ever been done?

Yeah, I don't have any sets, lol. And I'm not sure about a tournament, wall games normally take a really long time.

I'm over in San Francisco. If  can make it to your shop or if you come down to my area for a bit maybe we could meet at an fnm or something?

Also, link to website?

I know I said that I like kids to learn magic but yesterday I had to play a 7 year old. He actually had more experience than me lol and even took game 1 bc I (honestly) didn't take the game seriously. I still tried but I purposely misplayed bc he had a polukranos out and he was so happy then he swung I had Doom blade in hand and he blood rushed GCR and he was excited bc that was lethal he had no other creatures out and next turn I had lethal but I just couldn't he was so happy lol

It wasn't my parent, but my uncle and his friends who brought me into magic. I loved the game from the beginning. My first deck was given to me by my uncle--It was a poison counter deck {Marsh Viper} used to scare me :P --and him and I would play games and he would destroy my deck. He and his friends taught me by challenging me. I've always had someone to play with.. at the time. Now they've moved away from me and I find myself, quite literally, playing decks against no one. When/If I would have kids if they wanna play Magic with me or just learn how it works I will gladly teach them and play with them whenever they want to play, just because I didn't have that opportunity when I was younger.
