Hey guys,
I'm looking for some assistance with building a deck. I'm a seasoned vet when it comes to playing the game, but I've been out for so long now that I feel like I can't remember the combos or the current T1 sets move to quickly with new rules that I can't keep up.
I would really like to make a deck in the modern format, EDH format, legacy format and standard. I have any card available to me so money is no object.
I've went over deck lists online over and over and it just doesn't help. I can't stand the types of people who just copy deck lists for casual games. And that's all I really intend to do. Play casually.
So anyone who could stand this long introduction, thank you and please lend me your expertise.
Choose an archetype. Maybe {Melira, sylvok outcast} combo, Mono red burn, or esper control. Once you've got a category or commander, try browsing the decks of that type on this app and grab some ideas. Go through the database and set up some filters to find cards for your theme! Ask friends if they could build a card around any niche card, what would it be, and do that!
Hope that helps :)
Merfolk is a very fun deck in modern
EDH - crazy "I win" combos are boring and usually end up in deck hating
Pick a legendary you like and just build around their theme
Ie {Trosti} - life gain/token deck - throw in stuff like {doubling season} {Rhys the redeemed} etc
Thanks for the great insight.
Picking an Archetype would make things a lot easier on the overall deck building process.
As far as EDH goes, do people play mono colors? Or is that really hard? I had noticed a card called Kemba, that seems like it could be pretty fun. Just put loads of equipment in there or something.
And Modern, I have really enjoyed slivers in the past, are they still good?
What about standard?
Mono color is fine as long as someone isn't a dick and plays Iona. EDH for me is playing the whole universe and having bigger battles
Modern - not my forte but like standard but just more money.
Standard - spend money on land, next step spend money on everything else. Multicolor and mono color decks both work.
Have you seen any good legacy combos lately?
Some of my favorites are:
Megrim + Warped devotion
Squrral wrangler + epic (something I forgot the name)
Minds desire + tendrils of agony.
Are those still played these days?
I usually play casual with other people who have limited funds. I find that some of the event decks to be fun. Most recent the boros or selena. If you go back the 2012 core sets were fun vampire or illusion deck. They come ready for decent combat but get owned by well made decks.
Also on my return I really enjoyed the {Kiln Fiend} deck. Splash a color with instants and a lot of cheap removal and the game is over fast.
Real men play {Phague the Untouchable} as their commander.
And for people who say it is impossible, {Dash Hopes}. There, now it's just really stupid, but possible. :)
I would find decks that you like to play. Commander I like 3 colored commanders. It provides more fun cards. I'd go with {pheldaggrif} :). And modern I like USA flash. Legacy is Merfolk and standard is currently golgari aggro. Or something else that's fun is to pick a color(s) out of a hat and that'll be your deck color(s).
Hope this helps

It did, thanks a bunch!
Are Sliver Queen/Sliver Overlord played out? I've always been a big fan of Slivers in EDH.
You will get hated for playing slivers, and then get immediately targeted. Same for infect. :(
Well, that's definitely good to know.
How about Kemba??
If recommend picking a creature type with a gimmick you like for me it's knights and ninjas

How about Kemba??
I made a mono-{W} EDH deck that was supposed to originally have Kemba at the Helm, but it was a gift for my girlfriend and she decided on {Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant} instead. I can bump the list under the Commander tab if you'd like. It's essentially an Equipment Voltron deck.

I disagree, modern is not like standard and it is not more money!
With the seemingly constant rotations in standard, it is a very expensive format to keep up with. In modern, once you finish your deck, you're done. Maybe add a new card here and there, but it doesn't take heavy hits from rotation, which is awesome.
The modern format is typically much quicker than standard as well, it's much more versatile and more worth your time and money!

The bigger card pool and extra room for creativity makes it pretty choice. =]
It is by far a superior format, but recently I have been enjoying Standard. In a couple months Modern will be calling my name though! Come sooner Modern Season!
I've grown fond of the Modern format, personally. Doesn't change all the time!!
I've also found it smart when making an EDH deck to throw in a few legends of the same colour combination for a back up plan if you come across a deck that flaws the deck's tactic of the original commander.
For example, I have a {W}{B} deck that runs with {Teysa, Orzhov Scion} as commander, saccing creatures for various utility gains. But if I come across a {Sigarda, Host of Herons} deck for example, I swap Teysa out for {Obzedat, Ghost Council} (originally {Ghost Council of Orzhova}) to focus on the leeching of life aspect of the same deck.
So long story short, chuck another legendary in for a back up commander to change the theme of your deck.

That's a great idea!! I will take a gander at some of my legendaries and throw a deck together.
You guy are all very nice!! Thanks so much for your help!!
So, I threw a modern deck together today. The main components are megrim/Lilliana's caress and warped devotion. Then using big voice and discard cards to punish. Unfortunately, after play testing it, I've noticed how slow it is. Any suggestions on making it quicker?
