Title: Commander Damage Question
Post by: Agrus Kos, Enforcer of Truth on November 05, 2013, 08:03:34 AM
Okay so I know that when you deal 21 commander damage to a player, you win the game. I have two questions about this: Is it 21 damage from one commander and you lose? For example, if player A deals 15 commander damage to me and Player B deals 15 commander damage to me, do I lose or does one player need to deal 21 damage? To add on to this, if Player A casts his commander and I use {Gilded Drake} to steal it and then attack Player A with my commander and their commander does the damage add together?

Commander damage is the total sum of damage you have done with each commander/player pairing. if I deal damage with my commander and I {ray of command} somebody else's commander, the two are not added together but kept track of separately. I realize this is confusing. But if you kept gaining control of an opponents commander, say {karona, false god} and you yourself are playing {kamahl, pit fighter} as your own commander, the combat damage they deal is both considered "general damage" but kept track of separately.
So to answer your question, no. They don't add together...

If I steal an opponent's commander and deal combat damage to him/her with it, does that count as normal damage only or does he/she receive commander damage somehow? I doubt it, but I want to be 100% sure.

Commander damage counts as both regular damage and commander damage. So if you hit someone at 40 life with a commander of 5 power, his life total takes normal damage down to 35. He also tracks separately that he has received 5 damage from that particular commander. If a player accumulates 21 damage from any ONE individual commander, he/she loses the game.

That being said, if you steal someone else's commander and hit them with it, they take the normal damage, and their own commander damage is tracked as a separate commander hitting them.  For example, if you hit him with 10 from your commander and 11 with his own stolen commander, it does not = 21 commander damage, you have to get to 21 with 1 or the other.

903.14a (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=903.14a): A player that's been dealt 21 or more combat damage by the same commander over the course of the game loses the game. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)
