Title: Trample/deathtouch
Post by: Moocow4u2 on November 02, 2013, 04:08:52 PM
So this has come up amongst my friends a lot and I've even seen it here so I've checked the magic website in the FAQ's there and found this

"Q: What is "lethal damage", for trample purposes?
A: "Lethal damage" is defined as damage equal to the creature's current toughness, minus any damage that's already on it. This takes into account any damage that's being assigned at the same time as well."

So I'm assuming by this that with trample/deathtouch you still must assign their toughness in damage first. I asked just to make sure but that's what I get from that.

What you found is true. However deathtouch is a property of damage that modifies it to mean 1 point is lethal regardless of the actual lethal amount otherwise needed. I dont have time right now but the comprehensive rules have a section regarding this. It should be located in the combat damage section or the ability: deathtouch section.

Thanks for doing a new topic for a new question.

Actually, no. The way death touch works, is any amount of damage is lethal. With trample, any damage over lethal carries over to the opponent

Ergo: Let's say a 5/5 vanilla blocks a 6/6 with death touch and trample. One point of 6 kills the blocker, meaning the remaining 5 carry over

EDIT: Kaleo beat me to it

He always does its a rarity if he doesn't comment first. Or Gorzo

Keyeto usually beats both of us.

And just so I can have my input, I'll drop the same ruling as I did in the other thread that this came up in, so no matter where you look, you're not safe from a Keyeto ruling:

702.2b (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=702.2b): Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creature's toughness. See rules 510.1c-d.

Unglued/unhinged rules, 1/2 dmg is the minimum, so with trample death touch, you would get an extra half a point in :).
