Ok, i've never read any of the books... But! Going thru my old collection and had a weird thought. Given Ashiok's backstory, what are the chances that Chainer ignited a spark and given time developed into the Nightmare Weaver... Thoughts?

I doubt it. Look at the face. A white, feminine face versus a big, rocky, muscly face?
I considered that. But the chest looks like a man, and the backstory says maybe human at one point. But mostly from the abilities. Graveyard zone to exile zone.
I'm with you Butcher on the premise that the abilities are close to identical and I LOVE when WotC don't forget past stories, reuse forgotten characters in new ways and/or reveal forethought of a characters story arc and or progression.
It's highly plausible for Ashook to be Chainer. Chainer is a dude who looks like he relies on his swordsmanship and battles while using his umbralkenisis as a back up. With the spark igniting, he may have left the necessity for hand to hand combat, lessening in time the need for physical prowess (you stop going to the gym for a month, you rapidly decrease in size, in only a month) focusing more on magic manipulation and control of fear, nightmares and shadow. Therefore getting paler, thinner and obviously losing half his head ...

The lower half of ashioks torso has a shirt thing on it that closely resembles the sides of the chest piece on chainer.
...or maybe {Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver} is just another planeswalker in a Halloween costume... (Happy Halloween)
