Title: Sentient Creatures
Post by: xStrayKnightx on October 15, 2013, 07:51:24 PM
Okay, so in Magic, there are heaps, and I mean HEAPS, of creature types that usually are followed by a secondary type (Human Soldier, Minotaur Shaman, Elf Archer, etc).

My question is why don't some of the other free-thinking creatures have secondary types? Surely Angels are more than just that? And Demons as well?

That is a good point there! But I think in the case of Angels and Demons, that's probably all they need in the lore of Magic. I could easily see {Aurelia, the Warleader} as an Angel Knight, {Dread Cacodemon} as a Demon Beast, {Sunblast Angel} as an Angel Golem... but then again, what about  {Hollowborn Barghest}, {Illusory Demon} and ALL demons from Kamigawa. Then Angels are sometimes Angel Spirits too, there's even one that is just {U}, {Illusory Angel}!!!

I guess on the whole though, you're right, they could have extra subtypes. But they don't need 'em. 😊

^true! They've gotta be some of the only type-bridging cards since artifact creatures

Creature types are a tricky thing in R&D. Simply adding a creature type to a card opens a huge can of wurms as far as what that creature can do or even break. I have some examples:

{burning tree emissary} is a shaman and made a modern shaman deck viable in conjunction with cavern of souls. The deck took me by surprise and I garuntee if a pro posted it anywhere it would be popping up at every modern tourney.

{Vapor kin} is an elemental. It saw play in the pro tour for that reason alone. Sure it is blue and flying but that wouldnt be enough if it was not an elemental.

Imagine the {cavern of souls}, {decendant's path}, and {door of destinies} shenanigans if carda like {iona, shield of emeria} and {griselbrand} had extra types.

Flavor wise i totally agree, {Baneslayer Angel} is totally an angel knight.
