Just saw the Price Jumps and Drops and was wondering where Antes fit into Magic
The history books right next to banding.

Hahaha! That was a pretty good laugh...anyways to clarify, not cant, I wont. I do not wish to perpetuate the existance of such an archaic waste of game design.
Even if it wasnt archaic, if it was a standard mechanic, it was just complicated. Perfect for repelling newcomers trying to learn or confusing opponents.
But honestly it's just a keyword search away

Totally making a banding based EDH deck
Im bringing my LD EDH deck out of retirement just for you.
RIP {War Elephant} and {Mesa Pegasus}
Basically as I see it
You could take a strong creature and something with indestructible
Attack with both in a "Band"
Then if they try to block
You can make them assign all damage to the indestructible card. And have your other creature attack them. I believe that's how it works
You pair two creatures and if they're blocked you assign all damage dealt to and by them.

If using two creatures, one has to has have banding and you have to declare them as a band. If one creature is blocked, all creatures in the band are blocked, regardless of any evasive abilities. You choose how the combat damage is dealt to your creatures.
A band can be made up of any number of creatures that have banding plus one while attacking.
While defending, a band can be made up any number of creatures, as long as one of those creatures have banding. You decide how the combat damage is dealt to your band of defensive creatures.
There more be more rules that I'm forgetting at this time...

Ante...lol. Never played with that rule, didn't want to lose a card..
To answer the question that was asked. Ante was used on cards I think through revised. What it was if my memory is correct. After decks are shuffled and cut.. Each player takes top card and puts it to the side as their ante. If you lose the game you lost the card..
I should check my revised rule book, I still have about 9 of them. Think I even have a couple 4th and a 5th from the starter packs. Also a tempest "storybook" that changed from the rule book. Have all the empty starter boxes still too...
Could you imagine if we still had ante? I reveal: {Island}. You reveal: {Black Lotus}. I win at all costs and call you on ever slight misplay to get you to lose!

Lmfao! That better be a damn good island!
Think games were just one game too.. Not 2 of 3.. Well basically if you lost first game, you no longer had a 60 card deck!
Also old rule if you played first you got to draw a card too.

And with all of the crazy combos back before standard was made most games came down to whoever went first.
