Title: Awkward Scenario
Post by: Mattao19 on October 08, 2013, 02:57:11 AM
I have an essay due next Thursday but:
1. My parents think its due this Thursday (when it was originally due, but the prof moved it back a week)
2. Parents thought I slacked off and are mad that its due in couple of days and I haven't started
3. Just found out its due next week 2 hours ago
4. It's a long book review
So do I tell my parents that its due next week and that I forgot to tell them (lie), admit to skipping a class and miss valuable information (truth) or play it off as if they simply misheard me?

Well, I think you know what the right thing to do is (morally, anyway). But to be honest, focus more on getting the work done, and done well. No matter what you tell them, or when you tell it to them, if you show them that you worked/are working hard and did/are doing well on the paper, it won't leave them much to be upset about.

True but it's either work hard OR create a new deck lol

Work hard. Always the best decision. Magic is super important, but hard work is what allows you to get magic (and justify the reward of playing it) ;)

Very true! I love magic and definitely want to go pro but I understand that I need a job that can give me the funds/resources to play! It's a hobby now but I'd love to just go to 1 ProTour with my usual janky unforeseen decks!

If I didn't have a real life I'd have so many more decks...

That's so true I build a deck a month but I wish I could make more. I love building the manliest of the janky decks that piss off people bc they're so janky lol

Tell the truth, write the paper, and git 'er done! :D It's like a band-aid: the fast you snatch it off, the faster you can get back to the fun things in life.....like building awesome decks!

Magic will always be around bro. Schooling is more important when your at a younger age. Get good grades. Go to college. Get a degree. Make a good living that can support a game like magic. Magic is fun man, it really is, but in the scheme of things it should always be a secondary to the more important things in life.

Unless of course you reach "that" level of play in which you basically turn magic into a career
Like Major video game players or sports players
Then you have all the time in the world to work on play and just live Magic ;)

Well call me the devils advocate. But since you have a week I'd just tell them tomorrow the teacher moved it back.  And get working on the paper.

Tell your parents that you're waiting to do the paper so you'll be older and wiser when you do it.  Seriously though, as a fellow procrastinator I understand what you're going through.  The best advice I can give is what works for me.  I put it off for as long as I know I can still finish it, maybe a couple of days left, and when that time comes I just hunker down and pull an overnighter or 2.  I usually end up finishing with a day to spare and then I feel great because I did what I needed to do on time.  Then, show your parents your work to prove that they can trust you.

Hope I helped,
