yes but barely. when your turn ends you sac the trooper, then he comes back. At the start of the opponents end step, the gift comes back just in time to sac the trooper and bring him back. it works!

7 mana is probably too expensive to be useful though.  The trooper and the gift would have to be cast in the same turn.

And if he dies in combat from being blocked, when he comes back he doesn't have a {Gift of Immortality} so you have to sac him permanently.
not quite. if he stacks the triggers, he can put the sac on first and then the return. the return comes up and then he sacrifices the trooper. then the gift returns the trooper. He just cant ever block with him

None the less, it still extends his usefulness, leaving an unprotected 6 power creature that swings for six on his first drop and adds a one off blocker that will also give you another 6 hp lifelink. Oh, you don't want to lose your big beast? Just attack with your little guys then. :)
I wouldn't say it's the most inspired use for the gift, but it does do something a little bit amusing.
