Title: Double Strike
Post by: Segletes on October 02, 2013, 05:01:24 PM
If I assign a blocker to an attacking creature with double strike that would be killed after the first strike combat damage, will the second strike combat damage go through to me, with no trample involved.

Example, attacking creature has three power and double strike. I assign blocking creature with two toughness. There are no other special abilities involved. The blocking creature has his toughness reduced past zero during the first strike. Does the second strike of three hit me, the defending player?

No, the second combat damage step will do nothing.  You would still only do 3 damage to the 2 toughness.  This is key for lifelink abilities.

Would the second strike still hit the creature letting lifelink resolve twice?

If all blockers die from the first attack, the second attack essentially fizzles because
1. It's still a blocked creature, so no trample = no player damage
2. No remaining blockers means nothing for the second attack to assign damage to
