Although it's not a top down design, ravnica was inspiried by Eastern Europe. I thought it would be fun to figure out the inspiration for each guild...
Trouble is, I can only figure out where the Ohrzov were inspired from. And possibly Boros
Were do you people think the inspirations came from?
I'd say gruul was the berserker clans that ran rampant...

possibly. Although I think we should also look past the surface. The gruul were oppressed and there homeland taken over by an invading force they couldn't hold back. This kinda reminds me of what happened to the native Americans, although there were no native Americans in Europe.
Where was there somewhere where a people revolted against a power not only invading there land, but way of life?
When Rome tried to conquer their lands...
There was also when Rome tried to invade Eire... For some reason they could never conquer Ireland

I think I figured it out. The guilds represent Eastern Europes history
My reasoning comes from three guilds who could represent sequencal events
Selesnya-communism in theory
Ohrzov-communism in practice
Gruul-response to communism from the people
Edit: hey! Why did the dragons maze have to be run in a specific order if it wasn't based off of Eastern Europe history?
Izzet could be the industrial revolution
Apparently the Soviet Union took over the media, school system, churches Ect. That could be dimir inspiration

In the history of Europe? Man... Take your pick
It's also possible that Boros might be inspired from the Trojan war
