Title: Gaining Control
Post by: Jlamb5 on September 29, 2013, 02:17:23 AM
If I cast {portent of betrayal} and gain control of a creature that has a bestowed enchantment on it (or any enchantment for the knowledge sake), does the bestowed creature fall off?

No. It's just like any other Aura/equipment: you'll control the creature, but your opponent still controls anything attached to it.

This means that if the bestowed Aura falls off while you control the enchanted creature, your opponent will still get the creature that Aura becomes.

Important concept when counting devotion.

So to clarify my understanding.  When I gain control of said creature with any enchantment, the enchantment comes with it and is then returned?

And to think that I thought I knew most basic situational questions

Think an enchant - aura as clothing and the creature as a person. The clothes belongs to me but I gave to that person. Wherever the person goes the clothes stay with him, but the clothes still belong to me. When he comes back to me he still comes back with the clothes (assuming he wasn't stripped).

And if those clothes have christmas lights strung through them you are the one that has the off/on switch since they are your clothes.

Think of it like equipment, it works more or less the same way.

- Person A controls a creature. He/she then either bestows a bestow creature onto it or equips it with a piece if equipment they control.

- Person B steals the creature. Person A still controls the bestow creature/equipment attached to it, but it will still give benefits to the creature while stolen under person B's control.

- Person B kills/sacrifices the creature. Person A still controls the equipment or bestow creature, and always has, so it returned to Person A's battlefield (in truth it never left, it was on the battlefield under Person A's control this whole time. The card was just probably moved around as it was "attached" to another card, to keep track of where it's bonus was being applied)

Just a quick related question:
-Opponent had a creature with 2 counters and an ordeal card attached to it
-I steal with {Portent of Betrayal} once it's my turn and attack.
-Creature gets its third counter and ordeal is sac'd and triggered.

Since my turn's not over yet, I'm in control of the ordeal too and it benefits me accordingly, right?

Assuming I'm right, i had a pretty sexy power play when I stole a friend's creature and triggered it while it had  {Ordeal of Erebos} and  {Ordeal of Thassa}.

If you see gorzo's explanation, the aura is still controlled by the owner. Therefore the sacrifice gain is still given to the aura's controller.

Ah, found the rule. 303.4e. Yeah i was wrong :(
I thought maybe the case was different since the aura is simply sac'd but nope. Thanks for clearing it up.

Looks like I'll have to apologize to that friend.

Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 had a pretty good way of teaching you this. In one of the Encounters, your opponent had stolen one of your creatures with Equipment on it, and in order to win, you had to move that equipment to one of your other creatures.

I've always understood this interaction since then.
