Title: Getting into Modern
Post by: Lyriczulu on September 24, 2013, 03:13:07 PM
I'm interested in getting into modern but since its such a large format compared to standard I have no idea where to start! I've found a couple of articles that talk about key/commonly used cards and the main deck archetypes and I'm liking how diverse it looks (though it does seem rather complex).

So if anyone has any ideas for a good beginner deck/archetype or if you just want to talk about your favourite deck/archetype feel free to comment!

I made an {Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite} deck just because I love Elesh Norn. But all of my decks usually have a theme/are tribals. So I may not be very much help with competitive Modern.

Well I straight up bought her because I LOVE her. Elesh is my jam....creepy and classy.

Affinity, Infect or Melira Pod...:) first two are quite boring...:) so straightforward decks but Pod is fun...;)

Fish are fun. And sorta budgety.

I recommend u/r  {Splinter Twin} combo. It doesn't break the bank the way Kiki or Melira pod do, and it's just as fun and easier to pilot.

U/R is one of my favourite colour combos so I'll give that a look for sure

{Kiki-jiki mirror breaker} {scalding tarn} {steam vents} {sulfur falls} the blue red old rav land that taps for any combination of red or blue, don't break the bank?

Please, I said less than pod decks. If you want a competitive level modern deck, it's not going to cost pennies.

I've wanted to get into modern too. From what I have seen {B}{U}{G} Infect Aggro is very good with turn 2 and 3 wins.

Same... Played someone online, and after 20 minutes of him going through the motions, I asked, "are you trying to play a game? Or is this solitaire?"

Affinity can be cheap but is very vulnerable. Tron lands aren't too expensive but they run the risk of land destruction completely ruining them. Budget modern can be vicious if built and played right, but building tends to be the biggest barrier

What do you like to play in standard?
How much money do you have?

I only started playing a few months ago and have mainly been doing drafts and my only deck that could be decent is a U/R burn deck. Ideally I'd like to avoid dropping a bunch of cash before I decide if I like playing a certain deck or modern as a whole but I understand that it's a relatively expensive format, at least to start.

I've been thinking about entering Modern. I was thinking about an artifact deck of sorts, but I'm not sure if I have the money to start.

If youre going to play burn, drop the {U} and go RDW {R}.

You could try {U}{R} Delver if you wanted to stick to those colors or {R}{W}{U} Control, but whenever you start adding colors your mana base is going to get expensive.

Yeah for now I'm going to stick to 1-2 colours. I've been looking into UR Storm and Splinter Twin decks and some affinity as well and it all seems pretty fun. I'll definitely give Delver a look.
