Title: Sealed Limited Help
Post by: Spikepit on September 24, 2013, 05:38:38 AM
I'm wondering from all those of you who went to sealed prerelease party/tourney, if there's any suggestions you can give me as to what direct to take, from your experience not so much preference?

6 boosters and bring own land.

I know it's a hard ask with out actually knowing what I'll pull, but general pointers will help!

(I haven't been to a SLR night in years!

playing theros?

first off the land, most likely the LGS will have basics for you.  17 land seems about right, but with theros depending on how big your beasts are you may want to go 18

creatures with evasion and some type of ability are always best.  think flying firststrike deathtouch, run 15-18 topping out your curve around 4 big threats. (cards that can finish the game)

other spells.  fill the rest of your slots with removal, bounce, tempo effects.  try and stay away from anything that can be two for one'd. like auras.  a couple wont hurt, but not too many! protection spells like {gods willing} will save the day!

have fun!

Auras aren't normally good but bestow is excellent in sealed, try to keep your deck at 40 cards

Thanks guys! I haven't done an SLR since Kamigawa I think! But rusty! Yeah I thought 40card deck is the go. We do have to bring our own land as it isn't an LGS, it's just a dude who has a distribution license or whatever and does it for big events at the community centre (check me out on the multiverse, you'll see how rural I am!).

I'm wondering what colour you recommend after playing with it. I'm leaning black ... But I always lean black! Haha

17 land for multicolored, 16 for mono colored. Don't try picking cards you like and want to use. Put an overall solid pool. Go with what looks solid. If 3 colors looks the best, do it. You want what looks best. I won $143 store credit getting 1st splitting for 1st :D

I went black white twice and black blue once. Black is the best limited

Don't underestimate Heroic.
Most of the Bestow is crappy but the one with Lifelink is a game changer and the 4/4 with flying and first strike can win too.
Use all of the kill/removal spells you can (okay, not all but like 4 if you can get them), usually the games come down to one bomb wrecking the field.
Double strike is boss, especially when bestowed upon.
Monstrosity is pretty nice, {Hundred-Handed One} is amazing.
Don't underestimate ANYTHING with Heroic, one minute it is one 1/1, the next they have 7 4/4s.
Anything that has enchantment hate is definitely nice.
At my LGS Top 3 (including me!) ran white (not mono white but {W}{B}{G}, {W}{R}{U} and {W}{R}).
Make sure you use lots creatures, Theros sealed is ALL about creatures. Most of the spell-centric decks aren't even close to playable in Theros sealed.
Have Fun!

Thanks buddy! That's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for!

Thanks for all your help! Just gut back from my first SLR in years and had a ball. I pulled no mythics but that's fine, didn't need them!

Even though I pulled {Triad of Fates} and ordinarily would have based around them being my fav colour match, I had to go {W}{U}{R}. Here's what I ran:

1 {Anax and Cymede}
2 {Omenspeaker}
1 {Prescient Chimera}
1 {Thassa's Emissary}
1 {Battlewise Hoplite}
1 {Flamespeaker Adept}
2 {Leonin Snarecaster}
1 {Sealock Monster}
2 {Vaporkin}
1 {Wavecrash Triton}

13 creatures

1 {Spear of Heliod}
1 {Divine Verdict}
1 {Titan's Strength}
1 {Griptide}
1 {Traveler's Amulet}
1 {Magma Jet}
1 {Battlewise Valor}
1 {Vanquish the Foul}
1 {Voyage's End}
1 {Ordeal of Heliod}

10 other spells

I came a strong third out of a tough pool. Toughest was a {W}{R} {Purphoros, God of the Forge}/{Heliod, God of the Sun} based aggro deck, but {Anax and Cymede}, {Battlewise Hoplite}, {Wavecrash Triton} and {Flamespeaker Adept} hold their own in this deck.

I did find Devotion didn't slow nothing down, heroic gets beasties outta control!

Thanks again for the help all!

Minotaurs crushing people.

Did horrible in prerelease and also at a midnight draft on Thursday night/Friday morning.

Tonight, went Black Red Green with focus on minotaurs.

The 5 drop Minotaur with +2/0 and haste for all Minos was my decimator.

T2 the 2 drop
T3 the 3 drop w haste and +2/0 when he ETB
T4 4/3 vanilla
T5 the buff king
Swing for a .poo. ton.

Centaur battlemasters has an honorable mention as MVP

My opponent chose not to block him and he was already a 7/7 (3/3 + 3 counters heroic + one counter for +1/1 ordeal of erebos)

Before damage was dealt, I chose to zap my centaur with a magma vault (2 damage, 2 scry) and pump him up to 10

Opponent started sweating :)

Only had trouble against a control deck since he had so much bounce back and removal, but either way really happy about placing 3rd (somehow a guy with a bye got 2nd...) as I out some sweat on some decent players in the pod.

I know what I'm drafting for this block:
MINOTAURS!
