Title: Activated Ability
Post by: Mattao19 on September 19, 2013, 04:28:26 AM
I'm sorry I always forget this. What exactly is an activated ability?

112.3b (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=112.3b): Activated abilities have a cost and an effect. They are written as "[Cost]: [Effect.] [Activation instructions (if any).]" A player may activate such an ability whenever he or she has priority. Doing so puts it on the stack, where it remains until it's countered, it resolves, or it otherwise leaves the stack. See rule 602, "Activating Activated Abilities."

Yes, tapping is the cost and +{G} is the effect

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't {llanowar elves} ability a "mana ability"? Not an activated ability.

Pretty sure it's both. It is an activated ability by nature. An activated ability that produces mana. Some cards will say "activated abilitys cannot be activated unless they are a mana ability"

This is true. All mana abilities are activated abilities as well. There's a few rulings that point this out, but I think this one explains it pretty well:

605.1a (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=605.1a): An activated ability is a mana ability if it meets three criteria: it doesn't have a target, it could put mana into a player's mana pool when it resolves, and it's not a loyalty ability. (See rule 606, "Loyalty Abilities.")

This one's pretty solid too:

106.10. (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=106.10.): To "tap a permanent for mana" is to activate a mana ability of that permanent that includes the {T} symbol in its activation cost. See rule 605, "Mana Abilities."
