Title: Metric vs. Standard
Post by: 5/9 Turtle on September 16, 2013, 05:26:31 PM
Which do you prefer I'll try and keep an updated tally whenever I can

Metric:  7
Standard:  1

Metric, even tho I live in the US, the English system is so dumb. Every equivalent amount of units is so arbitrary.

Standard. Metric conversions may be easier, but I know the standard conversions and if you tell me it is 37 degrees Celsius outside... I have no idea what that feels like.

Considering my job I will go with Metric. Easier to work with and convert on the fly. Shame we never switched to it like they claimed we would do when I was in grade school all those decades ago.

Well yeah I know all the conversions too but it's so much easier to have it base 10

I can use metric for anything except temperature. I hate Celsius, we should just all use Kelvin

For temperature standard all the way. For weight and measurements metric is better base ten is much better but I'm not changing now.

That I can agree with. Celsius I'm not a fan of because of what you said. I have no idea what 15 degrees C means lol

What the bloody heck is a furlong?
And only bottling companies use fluid ounces.
I measure in cups and pints and quarts and gallons. Any smaller is teaspoon, tablespoon, ect.

Metric. English system is stupid, and only makes sense if you were taught it growing up. I could imagine if I had grown up being taught metric and then at 25 someone tried to show me the English system, it would be confusing as .love..

Perfectly stated sir!

I have still never heard of a furlong though.

Celsius is centered on the melting point of water and Farenhieght was "originally" based off of human body temperature

This is not quite true. The human body temp is only one of 3 reference points on the Fahrenheit scale.

Do you guys prefer decimals or fractions? I prefer decimals myself.

Depends. Sometimes you have to provide the fraction for a definite answer rather than a repeating decimal

Decimals all the way it's easier for me to do crazy calculations that people normally wouldn't do in their head but I try and normally is within 0.15 of the anwser

Automotive industry is like 99.9% metric at this point. Metric is much, much better. Unless you're an airplane mechanic - you don't need precise instrumentation for your nuts and bolts.

Drill bits go to the 64th, because tapping requires pretty close measurement. But who would ever need a 19/32nd's socket anymore? Metric is easier.

Metric! I just hate 'murican meshurmants! I spelled Measurements like the Standard system would, in a wierd way that just barely makes sense ;)

I'm also more familiar with standard, but metric make so much more sense. Base 10 is much easier. Probably too hard to switch now, though.

Metric all the way, especially when talking about temperature.

On another note

Nuts and bolts no, but parts have to be very precise, the machinists repairing parts of an aircraft have to make sure the part has the correct measurements down to microns (1000 microns = 1 millimeter)

I'm used to standard, so I vote for that naturally. But Metric is not bad, either.

I was watching a video for a Biology class and the guy said "water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius if you're a scientist...or from a part of the world where things make sense."

"If you're a scientist" <---lmao!  I'm going to start using this and since I am one it works wonderfully. Boy are my wife and friends going to get pissed.

I prefer imperial! Metric is annoying. I'm a machinist and all the machinery is imperial. My tools are imperial. It's easy to work with! Then we get a metric blueprint and now we gotta convert everything from imperial to metric and it's always weird measurements >_<
