Seriously though, I change decks so often that I never keep any super expensive cards. My personal favorite cards I have though are my {Emrakul, the Aeons Torn} (<3) and my foil Invasion {Crosis, the Purger}. I just love Emmy and Crosis is some sick art with that sweet old school foil.
Neither of them are horribly expensive though :P

I love promos, my favorite playsets of mine are buy a box {birds of paradise}, buy a box {celestial colonnade}, argyle signed buy a box {chandra's pheonix}, fnm {farseek}, and player rewards {day of judgement}.
I also have a playset of felix signed {creeping tar pit}.
Danny has nine foil {markov's chosen} signed by both Argyle and the model for that artwork. He got a personalized note from the model too.
The most expensive asset we have though is probably the playset of Argyle signed {liliana of the veil}.
Hmm we have a lot of cool stuff, it's hard to pick things out! I do love my foil {Marsh Flats} and {Arid Mesa}. My signed original {Temple Garden} is sweet as well. Foil Italian {Path to Exile} from conflux is nice. Honorable mention to our playset of {Tarmogoyf}!
Like Moneekah said, x4 goyfs are our most valuable. I have a signed Korean {Sliver Queen} that I'm pretty fond of. Probs some other stuff that I can't think of ATM.
My all time favorite cards are my Ravnica: City of Guilds {Lightning Helix}es. They aren't that expensive but they are from one of my first sets (when I was eight) and I love them.

My {Secluded Steppe} signed by Heather Hudson+ Have a 1997 Promo Card Template.
{Dirtcowl Wurm} from the Tempest prerelease. Not the most expensive or rare, but you don't see too many of them.
I have a foil {scavenging ooze}. And I used I have a foil {steam vents}, but I traded it for 3 promo {render silent}s, {sphinx's revelation}, and 1{hallowed fountain}
I am also a huge fan of promos, with 18 different kinds. Currently trying to get all 12 RtR block PreRe promos. I'm missing the simic one and all of the RtR ones.

I'm just not really of fan of buying cards as 'investments'. I'm gonna say go with one of the decks, probably the Legacy one if you already have EDH decks you can use. Legacy is a super fun format.

Leylines. Unless you have another suggestion of a budget deck that'd still viable and fun?
Leylines and Manaless Dredge are on the Low-Budget-Not-/Really-Playing-Magic track. My first one was Affinity, which is still pretty affordable. The only expensive cards are the set of {Mox Opals} and is still fairly competitive.

The three Semi-Competitive, Semi-Budget options I can think of off the top of my head are Affinity, Goblins and Merfolk. Affinity's highest cost is about the 200-250 for your set of {Mox Opals} and can compete pretty well. Goblins has kinda fallen out of favor, but the most expensive things for it are a set of {AEther Vial}s and {Cavern of Souls}. Merfolk is the highest cost of the three, since you'll need Caverns, Vials and probably a set of {Force of Wills}, but it can be absolutely devastating in the right metagame.

There's already a merfolk player at my lgs, already a few affinity players, and I want to play a more unknown deck.

Yeah. I've been on ebay, no one is getting $400+ for them. Someone at my LGS will sell for $375, trying to see if I can get em for $350
I have a bunch of {Auriok Champions} signed by the artist. At least the ebay auction claimed he signed them. Frankly I think the signature gets in the way of the flavor text :)
I also have a foil 8th edition {Grave Pact}, idk how I managed to forget that lol, that is easily in my top 3 favorite of my cards that I own.
