Title: Chaos cube
Post by: Kaleo42 on August 18, 2013, 01:34:31 PM
Help me out please. I am building a cube based on chaos. I anticipate this will take some time to put a full draft together and much longer to truly finalize but I believe it will make for hilarious games for the team and whoever else.

So what am I looking for? Random, chaotic, and potentially detrimental effects. Cards like {tyrant of discord}, {goblin test pilot}, and {vexing devil} come to mind. I want the games to play out as though you have very little control over your own spells. {Dovescape} I am considering as well. I need 360 cards (25-40 of which are nonbasic land) in this theme. Feel free to also mention staples that wont overpower the format such as {path to exile}. I do not know if i will use said staples, but this list is to get a pool of cards to work from.

I am actually fairly new to magic by comparison to a lot of players and have only played standard and edh to great lengths so my over all knowlege of what cards exist is a small portion of what's out there.

{confusion in the ranks} is one of the most chaotic cards I know. You might also add {possibility storm} to make it even more outrageous

What would be a third card to put the combo over the top?

{Eye of the Storm}
{Shizuko, Caller of Autumn}
{Karona, False God}

I'm trying to build a chaos-based EDH deck. Let me check my deck list for stuff that hasn't been mentioned so far.

{Grand Melee}
{Mana Barbs}
{Mannichi the Fevered Dream}
{Soul Conduit}
{Knowledge Pool}
{Mindslaver}
{Conjured Currency}
{Blood Moon}
{Grip of Chaos}
{Warp World}

Only if you want to give other players more mana. I just want the pseudo-manaburn effect, so I stuck with barbs :P it's less helpful, more annoying!

Good! :)

How about cards like {Forbidden Orchard}.  {Howling Mine} (may have been said). {Rites of Flourishing}, {Dash Hopes}, mabye some slivers?  The old ones.  That way if more people play them, all effects apply to all slivers.  That being said, if you do that, {Hivestone}

Any card from planer chaos?

Suggestions from Joel, my greatest mtg mentor to date.

Here is what I found while looking through the two best decks for this(red and blue): {Teferi's puzzle box}, {temporal aperture}, {crooked scales}, {stuffy doll}, {Puca's mischief}, {juxtapose}, {psychic battle}, {goblin game}, {puppet's verdict}, {tide of war}, {wild evocation}, {Kaboom!}, {stand or fall}, {avatar of slaughter}.
These are good too: {steam vines}, {Necrotic Plague}, {Traveling plague}, {Screams from Within}, {Takklemaggot}(such a cool card!) and {Endless Whispers}. Drop of honey and porphyry nodes.  Also, {spreading plague}, maybe {spreading algea}.
I don't think you will be able to make a color balanced cube that fits this(you will find very little white that fits well).
For black, you can have a heavy suite of hand destruction that discards at random(as opposed to reveal) like {Hymn to Tourach} and {hypnotic spectre}.
Cards with the keyword madness might be good too.
{Glyph of reincarnation} if you have enough walls(or you rule that the glyphs work on any creature and then just use them all).
If you want enchantments like {rancor}(ones that you can't get rid of), you should look through enchantments in Urza's block.  There is also a cycle of them in time spiral(block?).
Also, do a gatherer search for "Any player may activate this ability", you will get a bunch of hits that will work well.
There is also a card that on your upkeep it gets a counter then destroys stuff that cost the number of counters it has on it.  I think it costs five.
You also could make a planar deck that could add a whole lot more lack of control, especially if you require players to take their free roll.
{fuedkiller's verdict}, {survival cache}, {world queller}, keyword clash

Kaleo, thank you and thank your friend for me. I'm pretty sure that last post gave me enough to finish making a complete deck list for my chaos EDH :)

{Possibility Storm}?

Cascade
{Bloodbraid Elf}

Stuff that has to attack every turn like
{Hellraiser Goblin}
I find that when a creature has to attack every turn it makes the game more interesting because it takes choice away from the player

Also stuff that uses dice or coins like
{Goblin Tutor}
{Goblin Rookie}
{Scoria Wurm}
{Elvis Impersonators}
{Tavern Swindler}

And lastly maybe hellbent stuff
{Gathan Raiders}

Mabye we should find a type of chaos for each color!

Red would be {Confusion in the Ranks}, {Scambleverse}, and attack each turn type cards.

Blue would be {Hive Mind}, {Curse of Echos} {Mind Control} type cards.

White would be global effects like {Planar Cleansing}, {Balance}, type cards.

Green could be {Heartbeat of the Spring} type cards.

Black could be {Killing Wave}, {Necrotic Plague}, {Death Cloud}

And Lands could have interesting effects, man lands, {Contested War Zone}

Artifacts...  I dunno.

Then we have {Novablast Wurm}, {Karona, the False God}, etc..  For multicolor.

You are mostly on track with what I am already planning.

Red is the only truly chaotic color
White balance type effects are the best form of white chaos
Blue has a great deal of spell redirection and copy effects
Green has hard to control creatures, or power with a drawback, as well as mana sharing
Black has random discard and hurt random player, or hurt you for random adavantage
Multicolor will be a big part of this cube
Lands will be mostly just fixing
