Title: Best One-Drops
Post by: Agrus Kos, Enforcer of Truth on August 18, 2013, 01:01:10 PM
What are the games best one-drops
Title: Re: Best One-Drops
Post by: Mlerner12 on August 18, 2013, 01:01:55 PM
{Vexing Devil}, and then the whole boon cycle. Vexing is the BEST though.

Yeah...{Vexing Devil} is soooo much better than {Ancestral Recall}...

I agree with Monekah, we need a sarcasm font

I like it more... A 4/3 for one. That is awesome.  OR they lose four life, turn 1. That is WAY better than ancestral recall!!!!!!

There are a lot of 1-drops that enable sweet things to happen, like {Entomb}, {Glimpse of Nature}, and {Dark Ritual}. But as for raw power, I think {Ancestral Recall} takes the cake.

First of all, what are smoking and why aren't you sharing. Secondly, unless you have a {Searing Spear} or {Lightning Bolt} in hand, you take the 4 from a turn 1 {Vexing Devil}. {Ancestral Recall}, you draw 3 cards.

The reason I am asking is I want to make a one-drop and lower deck. It won't be legal in any format and I will have to use a lot of proxies but it will definitely be fun. Right now I am thinking Grixis. {Ancestral Recall}, {Dark Ritual}, {Lightning Bolt}, {Vexing Devil}, {Black Lotus}... Also thinking of going to 2 or three and down to include {Bob} and some other fun stuff.

{Lightning Bolt} is the only answer.

Now I am thinking of going America Control. {Swords to Plowshares}, {Path to Exile}, {Lightning Bolt}, {Ancestral Recall}, {Brainstorm}, {Vexing Devil}...

Hello? {ponder} and {brainstorm} lol come on guys!

P.s. whoever pinged me for that is super sensitive lol. I'm not mad, just surprised

How are those better than {Ancestral Recall}, except in some niche situations? (miracles is the only exception I could think of!)

Um because ancestral recall has been banned since the start pretty much? If you can use a card in more formats, it adds to it's power in my opinion

OP never asked about a specific format. He asked about the best one drops in the game, period.

And I just told you that I think a card is more powerful if you can use it in multiple formats. Can you read? Why do you have a vendetta against me?

Heck. Just make it Omnicolored and amongst the 1 drops, you can have  {Progenitus}. Jkjk.
But I'm serious about the 5 colors.
Also don't forget
  {Berserk}
{Goblin Lackey}
{Kird Ape}
{Sensei's Divining Top}
{Sol Ring}
{Æther Vial}
{Angel's Grace}
{Birds of Paradise}
{Exploration}
{Fastbond}
{Figure of Destiny}
And many, many more.
It might be a very good deck.

No vendetta, just trying to understand your reasoning here. As far as I am concerned, {Ancestral Recall} trumps {Ponder} and {Brainstorm} as far as being the most powerful in the entire game. Your answer I would agree with had we been discussing modern or legacy, though.

Sure, but I still don't follow how because they are playable in more formats makes them better in the grand scope of the game as a whole, as OP is asking about.

{Fastbond} is pretty ridiculous. Ah, the good old days of type one.
{Goblin Guide} is proving to be an amazing one drop.

One person thinks ponder and brainstorm are the best, anther thinks ancestral recall is the best. Both are right, neither are wrong. It's all subjective. Moving on...

I have to go with {reanimate}, the card that gave birth to my favorite archetype. Realistically, I don't even consider {ancestral recall} to be an option since it's price tag is so high, so there's that. Next in line is {brainstorm}.

{Path to Exile}. Every time. Definitely one of my favorite cards. And probably the reason I have like, 7 or 8 of them (2 foil 😍).  Cheap and effective removal in a color with some kinda sketchy removal.

I agree {goblin guide} is an amazing 1 drop. In aggro his drawback means just about nothing since you'll be dealing damage before it even has the chance to become useful for your opponent. Remember the amazing {jackal pup}? :)

Here are a few more nice ones to spur more discussion.
{Burgeoning}
{Candelabra of Tawnos}
{Concordant Crossroads}
{Death's Shadow}
{Deathrite Shaman}
{Extirpate}
{Glaring Spotlight}
{Gravecrawler}
  {Grim Lavamancer}

Actually, his "drawback" is more of a good thing, IMO! Think about it- you're gaining really useful information about their draws. Considering most draws won't be land (I digress, it varies deck to deck) you basically get a 2/2 for {R} hasty guy and get to see all of your opponents draws, netting you info on their deck. Very useful against control to see if you can play around counters.

{ancestral recall} is so good, it's banned in almost every format. Which means it sucks cause you can't really use it unless you play p9 vintage which is waaaaaay too overpriced and waaaaay too overrated...

And this was pretty much my point against {ancestral recall}. Don't get me wrong, I'm not stupid and saying its not a good card lol it's just that since its only playable in certain formats for a crapload of money, I prefer brainstorm

The lack of deathrite is disturbing. Vexing devil is terrible, it dies to any legacy removal. I'm not sure how it's even compared to a power 9

Holy crap you're right I am so confused as to why no one has said Deathrite Shaman yet... that card singlehandedly warped the format of legacy to midrange monsters.

 {Deathrite Shaman} had quickly become one of my favorite cards in the game. A hybrid 1-drop with 3 abilities. 1 for mana fixing. 1 to deal 2 damage to your opponent. 1 for life gain...and it's a 1/2.  This little guy has won me quite a few games coming out on turn one and just doing whatever I need done lol

I am honestly disgusted at some of the cards mentioned in this list.

Also, doesn't 1-drop usually imply a permanent?
"Drop" is just used in the place of "CMC", so it could theoretically be a permanent or a spell, as long as it has a converted mana cost of 1.

I don't know if this one has been mentioned, but {Sensei's Divining Top} is pretty baller! Also btw library of alexandria is a 0-drop ;) it is awesome though. It alone combos with {Mind Over Matter}!!!
