Title: Group Consensus pt.1
Post by: Spikepit on August 04, 2013, 10:02:28 AM
Is {Essence of the Wild} a good card and why?

No, by the next turn you should have 7 mana and be able to play a more powerful creature and so on every turn after. I would never play this creature.

For the purpose of the Devils Advocate, what if token generators were involved?

That's exactly what I was going to say. With token generators, this card can be pretty decent. Turning all your saprolings into 6/6's?

Then you could populate your 6/6s? Are they tokens still that are copies or are they just copies.

Pretty sure they're just copies but still, saps are easy to get out.

I like it IMO. You run 3 of em and 1-2 drops ^.^

He's pretty amazing with {Gelatinous Genesis}.

Yeah, but say they've got a big scary Planeswalker and you want to drop your {Woodfall Primus} and be done with it, then what?

You swing out with your 6/6s and hope the planeswalker isn't Vraska.

I tried really hard to make a standard deck based around him when Innistrad was first out. I used token generators and things of that nature. It was not good. But I'm sitting here holding on to my {Essence of the Wild}s in hope that one day they will be playable, because I really do love the card. Lol

I also love this card but also see its unplayability (I love making up words). That's why I wanted this discussion.

It's a 6-drop. That mana cost alone limits it severely in standard, and makes it unplayable in eternal formats. It's a super fun 6 drop, and is great in a token commander deck, though. But it's just too slow for competitive formats.

On small ones. I once had an EDH game with all of my lands out where I hardcast it for x=18.

Doesn't he only make creatures that enter as himself or did I misread?

Oops, my mistake.

It's just too easily dealt with. A counter spell or {Oblivion Ring} gets played, and you just wasted your mana.

That's a good point. With how much he costs, that's actually kinda crappy he can be removed so easily.

One {Syncopate} and your life is ruined. Followed by tears.....lots of tears.

He was actually really good with the Living Weapon Equipments a 10/10 {Batterskull} anyone?

Also yes, if you make more of him via a token generator, they are still token copies, so you can indeed populate them.

The thing is, you either base a deck around him and his ability, or avoid. There is no half measure with something like him that changes every creature after.
If you manage to get him out, then you just spam lots of him with plenty of your mana ramp guys that you didnt need to cast him. It makes a much better late game top deck out of an {arbor elf} .

Totally agree! Good on ya, Aussie!

NB let it be known I am neither pro or anti {Essence of the Wild}, just wanted to start up friendly discussion about it. I'll probs do it more about other cards in future as I can see pros and cons in most cards these days.

I actually really like this idea. We all got into a healthy debate over a card and at least for me, I got a new view on a card I wasn't too sure about
