Title: Zur the Enchanter, Vanishing
Post by: The Dude on August 03, 2013, 05:21:10 PM
Ok scenario
Zur the enchanter has {vanishing}
Someone targets you to sacrifice a creature
In response I activate {vanishing} for 2 blue
In response they activate another sacrifice spell so in first on stack
CAN I THEN reactivated {vanishing} so I'm first on stack

Modded subject for searching purposes. -Mike

Yeah, you should be able to.  No rules aficionado, though

I'm not sure but yeah it sounds like it would work like this:

Creature phases out
You sacrifice creature that isn't there
Your creature is already phased out so this ability doesn't do anything
You sacrifice another creature that isn't there
End of your end step, you get back creature

When a creature phases back in, do its ETB abilities activate?

Nope, it never actually left or reentered, it's just treated as if it's not there while phased

Ok, I just thought that because it was treated as nonexistent, it would not be considered in a zone, so when it came back it would be treated as entering the battlefield zone.

So there is a difference between phasing and bouncing?

Quite a difference, actually! Bouncing is simply returning a permanent to its owner's hand.

Phasing is more complex. When a creature is "phased out" it is treated as if it does not exist. Once it phases back in, it exists again. It doesn't leave the field, or re-enter or anything. It simply ceases to exist, for as long as it's phased out.

Adding to this, it's different again to Exile as well.
