Title: Making my Girlfriend a deck
Post by: IntoFire on July 31, 2013, 07:09:15 AM
First of all, when I say "girlfriend" I mean my friend whose a girl that wants to start playing.Should I just give her the deck I made for her or just go with an Intro Deck?

What is the deck you made for her? Blue Faeries with cantrips is another one due to the choice from a full hand ... and cute Faeries.😃

I've actually taught more just straight RDW than any.

It's really easy for someone to understand play land and turn creatures sideways.

I made her a {U}{W} Azorius deck. She liked thise two colors the best so that's what I made her.

My gf has a thing for faeries so I put together a dimir faerie deck that actually plays pretty well and is fun and very straight forward to play.

Well with the zombie craze I have seen a few girls playing stacked zombie decks "casual"

I played against a girl at FNM who was borrowing a deck from her boyfriend.  She was playing BW sacrificial zombies.

My girlfriend plays a mono black deck with lots of buffs and enchantments

Start with mono color. Most new players learn with green, as it's the most straightforward of all of the strategies, but depending on her personality, she might love black zombies, red burn, or white weenies to start with. In any case, I'd rely heavily on creatures for (and against) her first deck. Don't overwhelm a new player with a lot of instant-speed shenanigans and certainly no manipulating the stack just yet.

When I made a deck for my friend (Not girlfriend) I taught him about the rules, and let him use my cards, and he liked it. I then explained each colour and each guild, and he chose Golgari, moved to simic, then orzhov for a long time, and has finally settled (for now) on rakdos. I would recommend Rakdos, as it's very simple to play and make but can be extremely overpowered. I could post the deck list if you want.I think the easiest guilds are Gruul, Selesnya, Rakdos, and anything else simple Aggro. You could do Azorius, if you left out counter. Then it's very easy.

A girl I like wanted to play magic when she saw me and her friend playing once, let her use my RB innistrad vampire deck and she went nuts.  Since then I try to stay as close to standard as possible since I don't like broken combos, so for her b-day I gave it to her permanently.  Not throwing stereotypes around or anything, but girls certainly do love vampires...

I don't know why, but the girl who I helped into magic likes all the -1/-1 counters, and the idea of letting your enemy decay...  Then again she is goth.

I started out Golgari, wandered into Dimir, and now I'm a Grixis girl. Anything with Black is a FABULOUS choice, because Demons/Vampires/Zombies :D loooovvvveeeee. But honestly, I think she'd like anything, so long as you made it especially for her ;) because it shows you care enough to put in the effort to get her interested and playing regularly with colors and tactics that she might like! Bravo!!!

Standard deck for another month :p but its her deck now so she can do whatever she likes with it so long as she doesn't damage the cards and make them worthless.

When I first started playing I didn't get excited over cute cards or creatures. I liked the game itself, and I enjoyed winning. The first deck I made for myself was a mono white weenie deck. I agree that for new players, mono colored decks are easily the best to start out on. As a female, I sort of despise all of this "they like cute cards" talk. Make her a deck that has potential to win, she'll appreciate it a hell of a lot more than a {Grizzly Bears} deck.

This is what I put together for my gf, picked up pink sleeves, pink deck box, I think did pretty well. Didn't really work though, it hasn't really grabbed her, she respects that I play, but she's just not the kind of person to embrace it(at least I don't have to worry about her sneaking into fnm).

I guess it can be. But I doubt any deck based solely around how adorable cards are ever won a tournament. On a deeper level, it's just irritating to see females being stereotyped, especially when it comes to this game. As a female, I'm not just seen as "another" player, I'm a "girl player" in most of their eyes, and when people make degrading comments like "haha you got beat by a GIRL" (to my opponent) or "wow, you placed?" (To me, not even knowing how long I've played or what deck I run, only knowing my gender), it makes me want to hit things. So yea, it's not my favorite thing to come on here and read about how much girls "love" cute creatures.

I feel you homie. I ran a Dimir deck during the Gatecrash release and EVERYONE was like "Dimir sucks, but girls like it". I stomped face that day with my Rogues and Ciphers. But it does make me feel good to be recognized as a contender amongst a male-driven sport. Because let's face it, Magic is made up of majority male players. Nevertheless, I'm okay with stomping faces of girls and boys alike :)
