Title: New to Magic...looking to building a deck
Post by: Catnip15 on July 25, 2013, 11:35:48 PM
Hello all, I am fairly new to MTG and am looking at building a deck to play with a few friends of mine, nothing to competitive. I am not sure if this is the right place to post this thread so if it is not please point me in the right direction. :) I know a decent amount about the game, but not everything. Since I play with friends we are playing with cards from any season, not just the new current season.

I want to build a deck that will cost me around $30, nothing much more expensive. Based on my friends decks and their styles I want to do something different, I think a green deck with lots of trample creatures and cards that get me mana would be cool. Of course another color as well but I am not sure which would work best with a green trample deck that gets mana out fast.

If you guys could point me in the right direction that would be great! As far as what are some good cards that are inexpensive and what other color I should play with green. Thanks :D

Sorry for being a newb!!!

I feel ya. And this is the right place. If you want a competitive deck, maybe {R}{W}{G} Slivers, 2014 core set creatures that benefit others livers. The best thing to do is probably buy an M14 booster box, and use those to make a deck with slivers and things that pump your creatures, like {Phytoburst}. This is heavy aggro, easy to build, competitive, and fun to play!  And if you REALLY want to annoy them, play Eggs. Someone else explain that, I can't even begin to explain how obnoxious it is.

Hi and welcome. :)

Being new is alright, and nothing to be ashamed of. We all start somewhere.
Firstly you dont need to go out and buy a booster box, or a bunch of new cards until you can figure out what format you would like to play and what cards you have fit in those formats. Once you have an idea of what format you would like to play, and you find a decklist that suits your budget, your play style and possibly some cards to have will fit into it, you can purchase the specific cards you need to build the deck (or even trade for them) which will allow you to keep your costs really low.

Hopefully this helps. Maybe have a browse through the sections of this forum for some ideas on what deck you would like to build.

All the best, and good luck!

Most serious players dont waste time cracking packs (unless its a limited competition). They buy exactly what they need.

Huh. Well, if you just want a ton of cards, but a box, if not get singles or intro decks.

There are also fat packs that come with 9 boosters a poster a d20 80-100 basic lands and a card encyclopedia of all the cards in the set. That would be good for seeing what cards you might want to purchase in the future these will run you around 40 dollars

These are awesome if you're just starting out. Hell, up until the holiday box was released, I still toted a fat pack box around to carry my decks.

Fat packs are great for giving you a decent amount of commons/uncommons and still gives you your lottery rare!  Plus deck boxes, a spin-down die (awesome!!), etc etc.  What's not to love??  :D

Buy 2 of the gruul deck from DGM. Combine them, take out the junk, and you'll have a decent deck

Easiest deck to do right now (that still works competitively) is aggro. I recommend Boros Aggro especially. {Spark Trooper}, {Madcap Skills}, {Ash Zealot}, {Shock} and maybe some {Boros Charms} if you find them cheap. I actually made a deck like this two weeks ago. Here is the link:http://www.mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/731742

If you can't find some of the cards, try {Rakdos Cackler}s, {Shock}s and remeber this deck will be going out of standard so if you are planning on playing in FNM find some cards to sub out. Also get rid of the shock lands if you want to get it down to your price range.

Well,Rakdos and Boros are doing pretty well right now.So probably {R}{W}{B}.

There's a pretty basic {R}{G} event deck coming out soon (see the topic in this discussion thread about event decks). Despite some underwhelming reviews it might be a good place to find a solid deck.

Deck Builder's Toolbox.  Not the greatest deal, but a good place to start.

How i started was My friend told me to buy 4 packs and I'd have a deck. If you are just playing casual you should buy packs and trade for cards, go to your local game store and see what cards they have. If you want a list there is a page full of decks for casual and cards that are cheap. Otherwise you can find a friend (the one who has played the longest) and trade for his crap commons. For instance you dont need to buy {dissipate} cause you can use {cancel} if your game store sells singles look through their crap cards for stuff like {shock} or what you need. But for your deck get 4 {elvish mystic} and 4 {kalonian tusker}. Dont spend 30 dollars on old cards because someday you will want to play standards at FNM and you will be dissapointed if all your deck is too old. I hope you can figure out how. Remember we were all new at somepoint too.
