Title: New to commander
Post by: Vindog on July 16, 2013, 12:03:00 PM
I am looking for suggestions for making a commander deck from the ground up. This is my first commander deck and I am on a budget so please keep it reasonable.

Well the first thing you need to do is figure out what is your favorite color scheme. Then pick a legendary commander from there.

If you're new you should probably try to stick to one or two colours. Red is usually the cheapest.

I was thinking either naya or jund for three colors or rakdos gruul or Boros for 2 color I like aggro. Any suggestions for commanders I've only been playing since rtr so I don't know many of the older cards.

The easiest way to get into commander on a budget is buy one of the pre-made commander sets and then just change out cards from there. It gives you the basis for a fun commander deck and gets you into the format without having to personally piece together 100 cards.

Precons are in the hundreds nowadays. There going to have 5-new Precons before the end of the summer I believe. They may be announced at ComicCon (along with Theros spoilers).

I'd just wait for the new precons or build a pauper EDH deck and upgrade it periodically.

I had no idea that they had gone up that much. Just saw them on eBay for almost $200 for some of them that's crazy. Yeah just wait until the new precon decks come out or pick mono color or a two color commander.

You can still get em on Magic Online for MSRP. Which is one of the many benefits. Also, if you've started recently, or as far back as Innistrad - you can make a good EDH decks out of standard cards. {U}{B} Zombies/Dimir with either {Grimgrin, Corpse-Born}, {Havengul Lich} or {Lazav, Dimir Mastermind}

Pretty much all the the new RTR legendary creatures make for awesome commanders and this block as a load of awesome EDH cards as well

RTR block improved my commander decks significantly. The guilds offered many tasty color combinations. One of my favourite is {teysa, envoy of ghosts}. My friend uses {tajic, blade of the legions} which has awesome possibilities.

Like everyone has been saying: standard magic offers up a number of good EDH cards. You can make a fine deck out of most of the guild commons/uncommons/rares that you'll likely encounter from opening packs. Then then mono-colored cards are fine too. There are "too many" great options for a Selesnya deck considering standard, a fierce Boros deck, a long-play Dimir deck or even a permission based Azorius deck {Sphere of Safety} and a myriad of {U}{W} enchantments. Orzhov "Extort" decks are great too, because you can drain life from each opponent - gain that much life.

Mostly every RtR block card in a guild color/mono color guild aligned isn't a bad option in EDH. CMC prohibited cards become better in multiplayer (you get more turns to cast huge cards) and low CMC cards can be great to always have pressure on the board every turn. Your curve becomes much much different in an EDH game because of that cushion.

EDH can be broken with cheesy combo decks for sure, but if those people can be hated into other strategies, you get a much more personal meta game. For a long time I ran a {Sen Triplets} deck with different lockouts, I got hated out because I had no allies, switched to {Dromar, the Banisher} to play more of a "Kingmaker" role. A friend of mine ran {Kaalia of the Vast} for a long time, until we all teamed up and killed him repeatedly, got frustrated he didn't get to "play" and switched like me.

EDH is an ever evolving meta game. What might work this week may not next. People keep tabs of scary decks, even if you don't win a game forever - others are keeping tabs and trying to keep you from the next level of dominance: there is a much to account for. Playing all Standard cards in your first EDH deck, or playing basically everything you've got that fits - eventually you can upgrade or swap things based on the environment you're in:

Some basic principles are covered in the Guide to Commander thread sticked up top, but no one really "needs" a certain card or combo to win games - sometimes it's good play, dumb luck or inevitability.
