Title: Alters in standard play
Post by: Slenderbro on July 15, 2013, 04:38:12 PM
So i have a guy at fnm that i know will call a judge about this when i drop my alter, so is there any real rule that says i cant play them?

The ones i have dont have any of the text, mana cost, or type obstructed.

alters, or proxys?

if it is a card with paint on it, he's wrong and is being a doucebag.  probably because he's jealous.
if it's a proxy, he needs to calm down.  it's just fnm.
Just alters, i put a 3d token i had made out and he flipped out and called a judge saying i was cheating.

This same guy wont let people play token makers if they dont have the token to go with. He even called a judge when someone put out the gatecrash 1/1 soldier token that's red and white because the token they made was supposed to be a white only 1/1 soldier.

that guy is just too deetermined to win by any means necessary.  the tokens they make are optional to use.  there are cards that make tokens that they didn't make the token for.  think MMS.  they made tokens that had never been done before.  if you can't use something just because you don't have the token, there would have been unplayable cards.

I would advise the LGS to ban him from their store, just because he is a douchbag.  I thought you were refering to a card that was altered.  not a token.  pro's use dice for tokens.  I would give you bonus points for having a 3d token

Yeah i was, i'm buying an altered kalonian hydra and i wanted to have some defense when he did it.

Ya alters are fine. But you are suppose to bring it to the judge to make sure it's fine.

It can't have any bumps or textures to the card. Other then that its legal

Go ahead and beat him with an all alter deck and hear him cry mommy

I thought that for alters to be legal in play they need to have all the important things still.

Mana cost, card type, keywords and any activated or triggered abilities if they have them.

Typically, yes, and in tournament play all non-official alters (so anything that isn't a WotC printed promo) needs to be approved by the judges before the tournament. It needs to be determined that all information is present, and that the card is not marked in the deck by weight or feel.

However, these are tokens that he's talking about. Alternate art tokens. You can use anything you damn well want to represent a token as long as you clearly define what it represents as you use it. You can use dice, scraps of paper, Khal Drogo cards from Game of Thrones card game, Pokemon cards, action figures, whatever. Alternate art tokens are fine, and that person is probably just messing with you for the sole purpose of throwing you off (which is a jerk move).

Ahh yes, tokens can be whatever you need to represent something, as long as its clearly stated to all players.

However he did day he was about to get a  {Kalonian Hydra}.
