Title: My 2nd Prerelease
Post by: Mattao19 on July 09, 2013, 01:24:33 PM
My first one (DGM) I was very new to magic and was all by myself and had no clue how to build a deck lol. Needless to say I went 0-8 ... Anyways I want to do a bit better for M14. Any suggestions. I've looked through mythic spoiler to get an idea but what's the best colour(s) in your opinion?

It's hard to say we could tell you a great deck or idea but if you don't pull any of those cards your screwed. I think gorzo wrote a good topic about draft and sealed if you can find it. Personally I think if you get the right slivers you will win. But I also think I will see a lot of people trying slivers and it not working.

Ok thanks and ya it does come down to luck of the draw but are there any combos I should look for like ya the slivers but tbh I kinda hate them they are very overpriced imo

I think all colors are strong in there own way. If you get a planeswalker you should try to play it. All the pw's are good in limited besides liliana of the dark realms. She doesn't do much IMO. I like white a lot in m14 and green. Also red lol. But if I had a god pull that I want I would go white green life gain counters ftw. Archangel of thune + Kalonian hydra = my creatures are 100/100 :)

Id say if you pull any of the pro guild rares you should run them, they seem like the most promising things in the set

Prereleases are certainly more luck based, being sealed event events, than other formats. But that doesn't mean you can't give yourself an edge with smarts and deck building skill!

My rules to go by for Sealed play:

1: follow the 23/17 rule. 23 spells, 17 land in your deck. No more, no less.

2: of those 23 spells, aim for at least 15 creatures (typically).

3: remember BREAD. While typically a drafting acronym, it helps in deck building, too. You are going to need to include, in order of importance;
Bombs (if my opponent can't remove this card, I will win this game)
Removal (gets rid of my opponents bombs and troublemakers)
Evasion (anything that makes blocking more difficult or unfavorable for my opponent)
Aggression (anything that brings the beats, and fast!)
Defensive (if I'm out of good cards, things that screw with my opponen't BREAD)

4: double check your mana symbols and curve! You want most of your cards in the 2-3-4 mana range, and curving like a bell. Don't forget to distribute your mana appropriately, compensating for double-colored symbols and which color you need earlier in the game. Try not to exceed 2 colors.

5: talk to your opponents! Especially if they beat you. Remember, it's in their best interest too if they help you. Ask them if they could look at your deck and make suggestions after the match.

Try to keep your colors limited, 1-2 is preferred, don't over extend yourself
