Title: Investing in cards?
Post by: Thetrufflehunter on July 07, 2013, 01:42:46 PM
I'm investing in supreme verdict, notion thief, blood scrivener, advent of the wurm, and abrupt decay. Are any of you guys investing?

I'm holding on to {Skylasher} and {Deadbridge Goliath} (some potential.)  Other than that, I've just been grabbing as many uncommon modern staples as possible ({Kitchen Finks}, {Spell Snare}, {Path to Exile}, {Serum Visions})

If you are planning on investing, I personally would try to get the foil version of whatever card you would like to invest in, I have a foil {snapcaster Mage} and the price for a near mint is currently $103, as compared to the non-foil counterpart which is $23. It is a risk because it might take a little longer to sell, but I'm sure there are players willing to pay the extra cash. From what I've seen over the last few years is foil cards retain their value if not increase in value as the block rotates. Hope this helps :)

Cool. Yah, I have 3 notion thieves, getting one from my friend soon, and 1 foil one.

The only way to really invest is in the unknown. Find a set with some bomb cards for eternal formats and then buy a box and sit it in the cupboard for about 5 years.

Even a currently overpriced modern masters box will be worth more in a few years when it's no longer available.

Current box to grab would be innistrad. With cards like liliana and deathrite, let alone some of the other awesome cards.

Deathrite as in  {Deathrite Shaman} he is a return to ravnica card not innistrad?

So good investment plan: buy to FTV:20 open one and sit on the other?

I'd like to think that this is true, but so far our extra FTV realms I'd disproving this theory!

Guess that would depend on what you bought them for and what you're asking? Also quantity vs return per item.

And some ftv are clearly worth more than others in the long run. Depends on what's in them but usually has at least that one money card, so depends on what that money card is and how desireable it is. Plus what the supporting cards are.

If I can nab em at around msrp, I will, and sit on one till it rises to a nice amount, then sell it at average.

I have never seen a FTV for sale for any less than double (and usually 3 times) MSRP

Ftv legends.  They sat for a while around me.

Echoing what some people said above, sealed innistrad box is a pretty sure thing to increase in value over time, also foils of modern playables such as snapcaster.

On an aside, if you are actually interested in making money, don't invest in magic.

^This.  And to go a bit further (in my opinion)--someone mentioned Chandra being worth a booster pack.  That's probably true, but most players that buy a decent amount of product probably get more value by trading than by selling.  I mean, occasionally you sell cards because you need money, but selling cards to buy other cards (again, in general, not necessarily always) is not the best idea.

Example:  The other day I sold a {Voice of Resurgence} for $20, which is what most retail stores will give (if not less now) since the card will most likely decrease in value over time, not to mention they have to sell for a profit.  That being said, I think I probably could have traded for closer to $60 worth of stuff.  Just something to keep in mind.

Ks post was really good, and yeah I usually take a big stack of cards and trade for 5 bucks and get cards I want my store sells card used for 10 cents!

I would advise against that, seems like it should be weakening in face of strengthening economic conditions.

Would have been sweet to buy tesla at ~30 a month or two ago now that it's sitting at 120. Also still living the dream of Mannkind's product getting FDA approval someday....
