{Bond of Agony} + {Tainted Sigil} + {Thrull Parasite} (or any creature with extort)
Pay 19 life then trigger Extort
I know it's an unorthodox way to win but hey. Still would be an interesting finisher.
You still have to pay the mana cost for X, which is a lot in this X. The X life paid is determined by the mana paid, as an additional cost to mana, not a replacement for mana.
But if you had enough mana to do this, or an infinite mana combo or something, extorting The bond and declaring X's value as = to your life total (-1) with extort would probably take a few people out.
And pray you don't get hit by a {Counterspell}. Since the life pay on your end is an addition cost, you pay it as it cost on the stack - even if it's countered, that life is gone!
Awe I thought X was the life you pay not a mana cost...was so excited...
As for your question about white spells, I don't think so. White can prevent damage, but loss of life is a different affair. Even {Angel's Grace} won't save you - you'll lose the life, and you may not lose this turn, but as soon as next turn starts and the game state is checked, it sees you at 0 and you're dead, no chance to respond.
And, if you did somehow not pay the life (or were not able to, thanks to {Platinum Emperion} for example), the spell would fail. Gotta pay the cost to get the effect!

Lol sorry to be a dream crusher :P but the X is up that cmc corner. That makes it mana cost.
If it weren't, {Bonds of Agony} would be the most broken card ever. 1 black mana, pay any amount of life for that much damage? {Channel} is banned in LEGACY because it lets you pay life for mana, which needed a second card ({Fireball}) to convert it to damage and a third ({Black Lotus}) for the extra mana bump. This card would combine this infamous alpha deck into a single card.
Well I'll just use galvan myr and lead myr to achieve my ends....as soon as I get them...
