Title: Ruling
Post by: Bigdaddy19759 on July 01, 2013, 06:38:51 PM
I'm new to mtg. If I have a {endless ranks of the undead}, 2 {parallel lives}, 2 zombie creature cards, and 2 2/2 zombie tokens on battlefield. At my next upkeep, how many zombies would come on the field? I was thinking it would be 6 tokens because the 2 parallel lives would just simultaneously double the endless ranks. Am I correct?

 {Endless Ranks of the Dead}
{Parallel Lives}

You'll get 8 zombies. The ranks will give you 2, then the {Parallel Lives} will trigger. The first one will double it, giving you 4, and then when the second one triggers, it will double it again, giving you 8 tokens.

If you read the ruling on  {Parallel Lives} it says if you control 2 that the number of tokens that enter will be quadrupled(4 times) what would normally enter.
Therefore if you control 4 zombies at your upkeep,  {Endless Ranks of the Dead} will trigger and attempt to put 2 tokens onto the field, that will end up putting 8 after the parallel lives goes off, leaving you with 10 2/2 zombie tokens and your original 2 zombie creature cards.

Dang it, somehow I knew I was going to lose for over explaining :(

I'm not sure about that. {Parallel Lives} has a static ability not a triggered ability.  It only states a rule change, it does not actually double the amount of tokens put out.  I don't think static abilities that change rules stack.

Well, we do have this ruling from Gatherer:

9/22/2011 If you control two Parallel Lives, then the number of tokens created is four times the original number. If you control three, then the number of tokens created is eight times the original number, and so on.

And just to elaborate, {Parallel Lives} creates a replacement effect. When two are on the field, they both try to modify the same event. However, two things cannot happen at the same time in this game; there must be an order.

So when they see that you'll be getting 2 tokens, they'll both try to replace it with "double the amount". The first one (since one does have to go first) will say "Okay then, you get 4 tokens!" and then the second one says "Well, I still have to double it, you get 8 tokens!"

Once the replacement effect goes off, it has to modify that event, even if another replacement effect of the same type took place (provided everything is still legal to replace and such).
