Title: Pro-color vs trample
Post by: Lespend on March 03, 2012, 02:57:53 PM
So, I swing with {primeval Titan} and he gets blocked by a 1/1 creature with pro green how much trample damage goes through?

Upto 5 damage goes through. The attacker only needs to assign enough damage to kill the blocker, in this case 1. Even if the creature lives, that is the minimum you need to assign. Same applies to indestructible creatures.

Wait, when you say "Only has to assign enough" is assign considdered a "may" ability? Can I choose to only assign 4 trample damage in expectance of prevention trick in a scenarios voi of pro color?

From the rule book:

Example: A 6/6 green creature with trample is blocked by a 2/2 creature with protection from green. The attacking creature's controller must assign at least 2 damage to the blocker, even though that damage will be prevented by the blocker's protection ability. The attacking creature's controller can divide the rest of the damage as he or she chooses between the blocking creature and the defending player.

Wait, let's clarify something.

Firstly is there a time between damage being assigned and damage resolving for fast spells (instants, etc) to be played.

Eg. The attacker with the {Primeval Titan} has assigned two damage to my 2/2 blocker and then 4 damage to me.
Can I now play a {titanic growth} and crank my little 2/2 up to a 6/6 and destroy the Titan? And it then also live because it only had 2 damage assigned to it?

If so, that's crazy, if not nevermind :)

Players don't get priority between the time damage is assigned an when it's dealt. It used to be the case, but not anymore. Sorry. 😢

You can't do that. Once damage has been assigned combat is over, but you can do it as you declare blockers before damage is assigned.

There is time for fast effects after damage is dealt but before combat ends. Just not btw assigning and dealing combat damage.

With that question out there, what is the break down of priority? What is the fastest effect, ie; split second, sacrifice, morph, and any of these thing occurred during that phase? Can said person morph {bane of the living} and stop the extra 4 damage?

Why don't we start that question in a new thread, Lespend.
