Title: Mimic vat
Post by: Jackson get out on June 22, 2013, 10:00:05 AM
Sorry to post this in commander, I didn't know if I should've  posted this in commander or rules. If you  {Mimic Vat} your commander can you send it back to the commander zone, and still produce tokens with it because it is the card exiled with mimic?

Sorry, wish this would work, but the command zone or exile, not both, and because it is no longer exiled can no longer be used to make tokens.

Side note - this would be awesome, if it worked! ;)

This would work if the card didn't have the wording "if you do"

But can't you choose to leave the commander in the graveyard or exile?

You may choose so, yes. But if you do that, you'll be without a commander for the game!

Edit: Well, until something else dies. Actually not that bad of a situation.

You can return it to your graveyard too with  {Pull from Eternity} to put it back in the commander zone.

Can you {pull from eternity} and the artifact will still work?

Nope. It'll fail to make tokens cause it has no reference material to copy of of.

Won't it use the last valid reference? Like when you make 2 creatures fight and one of them does dies before the fight, and it uses the last information of the creature on the field?

Then they dont fight because there is no longer a valid target so the spell or ability fizzels.

If a creature dies before the fight, it can't fight:

701.10b If a creature instructed to fight is no longer on the battlefield or is no longer a creature, no damage is dealt. If a creature is an illegal target for a resolving spell or ability that instructs it to fight, no damage is dealt.

And here's the ruling on Mimic Vat, from Gatherer:

1/1/2011   The token created by the second ability will be a copy of whatever card is exiled with Mimic Vat at the time the ability resolves. This might not be the same card that was exiled with Mimic Vat at the time the ability was activated. It also might not be a creature card.

If nothing is there when the ability resolves, then it can't create a copy of anything.
