Story

Two knights walk down a path side-by-side, with no words spoken between the two.  They fight against all odds, and win all battles.  Their victory brings glory to their people, and shame upon their enemies.  Although, this was all about to change.

Walking through the dense {swamp}s searching for enemies, the two knights crept.  These two champions slice through werewolves, stab their sword through the hollow hearts of vampires, and obliterate all zombies who shamble across their path.  It felt like a normal day for the two knights, until they came across {Neverox, Overlord of Grixis}.

The two knights took a fighting stance as Neverox floated by.  He took notice of the two humans, and she began to think.  He knew he hadn't seen much entertainment recently.  So he began her work on one of the knights.  He whispered messages into one of the knights ear, as he avoided the strikes of the other.  He talked to him for almost an hour, while the his targeted knight stood still, listening to every word.  Nobody to this day knows the words spoken to that knight, but he quickly spun around clashing swords with his former ally.

The corrupted knights eyes flashed with a burning evil, staring straight into the soul of his opposing knight.  Swords clang against each other in a dazzling fight, which pleased Neverox.  He watched the two knights battle it out, as he cackled with glee.

The two knights clashed swords one last time, slicing each of them across the face.  Cutting a deep gash into the side of their flesh.  Just enough to scar their faces forever.  When suddenly, Neverox intervened.  He took the damned knight, and flew of into the night.  The two former allies stared at each as the gap grew greater between the two.  The pure knight turned around, and walked in silence towards the glory of the {plain}s.

Two knights leave each other at the {swamp}, not speaking a single word.

10 years later...

The pure knight trains the the new recruits.  They have been nicknamed the {Knights of Glory}, not because of their unfailing strategy, but because of the story of the two knights.  They train tirelessly to fight against evil.  Their brave leader frequently goes through battle strategies with the recruits.  Frequently explaining the {silverblade paladin}'s role in helping only the attacking person.  What to do when the {frontline medic} is needed.  He often went weeks with no sleep, striking a practice dummy with powerful strikes.  He would rarely look anyone in the eye anymore, not trusting a single soul completely.

Deep in the {swamp}s revealed a massive army of {Duty-Bound Dead}.  Although fragile, they could easily be put back together.  Their army has been nicknamed, The {Knights of Infamy}.  They brought in captured humans from all walks of life to use as practice dummies.  Soon after they die, they are stripped to the bone, and reused as recruits for the army.  The damned knight has gone through the battle plan several times, and killed who doesn't comply.  Overwhelm with numbers, not power.  {Murder} every single one of them, leave no one alive.  He rarely looks people in the eye anymore, trusting nobody but himself.

Each of the groups caught wind of the other's army strength, their unstoppable battle strategies, and their leaders.  The two lead knights declared war on each other, and they prepared for battle.  Stocking up on weapons, food, and of course people.  The influx of people joining the two armies cause {increasing devotion}, and increasing morale.

Soon came the day of war, everyone was both excited, and grim.  They waited to see who would win this equally matched fight.  The troops moved out, but the two knights had to go carry out a captain's duty.  They had to pray for the mercy of their troops.

The pure knight entered the extravagance that is, the {Godless Shrine}, just as the corrupted knight entered the old {Isolated Chapel}.  The pure knight prayed to his savior {Sublime Archangel}, while the corrupted knight chanted the name of his dark lord, {Neverox, Overlord of Grixis}.  Even though they were complete opposites, they ended the worship with the same words.  "Help us overcome our enemies." After this worship, they got up, and strolled out of the place of praise.  Little did they know, their gods were listening.

The army strolled onto the battlefield, the split between the {swamp} region, and the {plain} region.  Led by the two knights, the armies walk towards each other.  Meeting at the borderline, the two knights meeting face-to-face after 10 years.  They each touch their scar in remembrance of that day, and they draw their swords.

The armies draw their weapons, but the knights call them off.  The soldiers lower their weapons in confusion, until they saw the fire in their leader's eyes.  Everyone realized that this was personal.  They stepped back, as they watched the two exalted ones as they stood in a fighting stance.  They both had to finish what they started.  They leaped forward, spirits high, and swords ablaze.  They clang swords, and their fighting style equally matched.  When suddenly they both lunge their swords forward at each other, and the winner of this fight was.

Blood spilled on the ground, and the dead bodies fell to the ground with a thud, as everyone was shocked with disbelief.  Each army watched their leader die that day, both stabbed through the heart.  Both armies cried out in rage, and wept at the loss of their general.  They realized the situation at hand, and bared their weapons at their adversaries.  Almost ready to charge, they scream battle cries.

"Stop!" Cries a voice.  Everyone looks behind them, and they see their savior.  The {Sublime Archangel} flew over the army, settling over the two dead knights.  She moves aside the corrupted knight, and picks up the pure knight.  She weeps as she walks over to the pure knight's army, and lays him down in the middle.  She stands over the body, not saying a single word.  Suddenly she spins around with hatred in her eyes.  "Kill them ALL!" she screeches, as the army surges forth.

Neverox appears from behind ambushing them.  Great battles ensue as the two sides fight endlessly.  Until only two remained.  The Archangel lay  mortally wounded, and Neverox lay with a sword lodged in his head.  They breath a {Dying Wish} as they both die.

This war was later known as, "The {Killing Wave}.". Etched into the memories of many, passing on the gruesome stories from generation-to-generation. Although, there was one story that stood out from all the others.  It was an old-wise tale, about two knights.  It was so well known that special cases in {Murder Investigations} were named, "The Two Knights."

People often wondered if this story was real?  If so, where were they now?  The answer isn't quite clear, but many believe that one knight sits atop the grandest throne in heaven, the other in the darkest depths of hell.  They meet at the borderline between heaven and hell everyday.  They draw their swords, and fight.  Nobody ever wins, and nobody ever is even wounded.  But they feel themselves locked in an {Immortal Servitude}.

STORY - "The Unseen One"

"Stop her!"  The voices of the Azorius arresters echoed through
the catacombs as the sound of their pounding footsteps crept ever
closer to Vraska, though she was running as quickly as she could.
Going back to that dank, crowded dungeon was not an option, but she
was unsure how long she could stay ahead of these trained soldiers.
In her brief lifetime, she had gone from a simple, unknown gorgon
doing the lowliest work needed by the Golgari Swarm to one of the most
wanted by the Azorius Senate.  Her labored breathing and tired feet
were beginning to slow her down, but Vraska knew she could not stop.
Flashbacks of the prison riots and her escape filled her mind giving
her an extra boost of energy, yet the soldiers drew ever closer.
Vraska looked for a way out, but the tunnel stretched even longer,
twisting and turning out of sight.  The cubbies and crevases of the
underground tomb were filled with the bones of the dead revelers of
long forgotten times.
Suddenly, Vraska felt herself being pulled into one of the larger
{overgrown tomb}s.  Inside, a young man with piercing green eyes and
thick black hair held her close, covering her mouth.  Vraska watched
from behind a simple corpse blockade as the soldiers rushed past her
new hiding place.  The young man waited until the footsteps and shouts
faded in the distance before releasing his frightened captive.
As she caught her breath, Vraska studied her savior.  He reminded
her of someone, but she could not recall a name to match the features.
He was definitely an elf, and he dressed like a Devkarin.  However,
his skin tone was much lighter in color than any Devkarin Vraska had
ever seen.
"You're the Unseen One.  Aren't you?"  The elf's question
startled Vraska.  She had heard rumors about the Unseen One, a gorgon
woman wreaking vengeance on all who had wronged her, leading the
downtrodden masses in battles against their oppressors before
disappearing into the undercity.
Vraska burst out laughing.  "Me?  The Unseen One?  You have got
to be kidding me!"  It felt good to laugh again; it had been such a
long, long time.
"Then who are you?"  Vraska finally stopped chuckling, but a
grin, or rather a gorgon's grimace, still filled her face.
    "I'm Vraska, and you are?"
"Call me Myc."  Vraska's newly found ally slowly {disentomb}ed
himself and fished a {chromatic lantern} out of the crypt's depths.
"Follow me.  I know a place you can lie low for a while."  Myc lit the
lantern before making his way in the opposite direction the soldiers
had gone.  Vraska hesitated.  What did she know about this mysterious
elf?  He was obviously not a member of the Azorius Senate, but from
what guild was he?  While she debated, Myc turned back towards her.
"Are you coming with me or waiting for the Azorius arresters to
realize they're chasing perilous shadows through the drowned
catacombs?"  Within moments, Vraska was following Myc towards the
{maze's end}.  A sort of {deviant glee} made her steps lighter as she
imagined her former pursuers wrestling with the stonefare crocodiles.

Vraska had lost track of how long they had been traveling by the
time she and Myc passed through a {Golgari guildgate} and began
walking along a path through the {forest} just outside of Ravnica.
She was glad to be out of the ancient tombs filled with catacomb
slugs.  How she hated those things!  Now the threat of {aerial
predation} by archweavers was a more pressing matter as the sun began
to retreat, plunging the {forest} into darkness.  Vraska grasped Myc's
arm tighter, and soon his lantern was the only light to be seen.  She
could hear a lone timberpack wolf in the distance, but oddly enough,
she was comforted by Myc's presence.  Vraska had spent much of her
exile in this exact {forest}, yet it was this elf that brought her
comfort tonight, not the {mending touch} of the nighttime breeze.
Without warning, Myc's steps quickened, and Vraska began to see
the flickering glow of a campfire through the trees.  Frightened that
it might be a camp of Azorius soldiers, she began to pull away.
"It's alright," Myc consoled her, "It's my father's camp."
Though she was still nervous, Vraska relented and allowed herself to
be drawn towards the warm fire.  She had come this far.  Why turn back
now?
As they approached, Vraska could see the clear silhouettes of
several elves around the fire.  Two shamans argued between themselves
while several Devarkin swapped battle stories.  She was, however,
confused by the sight of three Silhana elves quietly watching the
perimeter.  On the other side of the fire, Vraska could just make out
the faces of the final two elves.  One was clearly an {elvish
archdruid}, and the other was a stately lich, perhaps a Golgari
commander or lord.
Before Myc could announce their presence, an excited bark sounded
from the far side of the fire, and a {thrashing mossdog} bounded over
to the two newcomers.
"Hey, Boy!"  Myc wrestled the plant hound to the ground while the
party around the campfire stood to greet him.  The lich had made his
way to the forefront of the troupe before Vraska recognized him.  It
was {Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord}, and one glance at Myc proved her
theory.  Jarad was Myc's father!  Myc was the boy described in every
bedtime story told to Golgari children.  Myc was the boy who devoted
his life to the Golgari Swarm after his father had rescued him from
Izolda and Rakdos.
"You are late, Myczil."  Jarad's booming voice caused everyone
else to jump.  While Myc stood tall to face his father, the mossdog
rushed, whimpering, for cover behind his master though Myc's gangly
frame did little to hid the towering beast and all his trembling
tendrils.  If she had not seen how calm Myc had been while waiting for
the Azorius to pass, Vraska would have been impressed by the way he
challenged the great leader.  She did not have much time to be
impressed though.  Jarad broke the intense stare with his son only to
turn his gaze on her.  "Who is this child?"
"I, Sir, am no child!  I am Vraska, a woman fighting for the
rights of her people.  My innocence and naivety were stripped away by
the brutal tortures forced upon my guild, the Golgari Swarm, by the
Azorius Senate.  Tortures that you did not have to endure because you
were far from the homefront searching for wanted men and women for the
few coins that their bounties could bring you."  Jarad knew better
than to meet the indignant gorgon's {killing glare}, though he did
maintain his authority by focusing his gaze above her stone-cold face.
Her fiery temper and fierce independence reminded him of Fonn Zunich,
Myc's mother, and he knew from experience that this young woman had
the potential to become a valuable ally.
"Janstina, Thererris."  Two {spire tracer}s stepped forward.
"Make our guest welcome."  The tension dissipated as quickly as the
bated breaths leaving the lips of the onlookers, and it was at that
moment that Vraska knew she had somehow won the respect of the loch.
The two women that had been commanded to welcome her needed no further
instructions.  They were obviously excited to see another woman after
many long months with their mostly male companions, and Vraska was
soon overwhelmed by the fussing of all seven of Jarad's female
warriors.
"Ladies!  Ladies!  Give our guest a moment to breathe."  Vraska
was surprised to hear such a motherly voice come from the lips of a
shaman, or rather shawoman, with such sinister body paint.  The
{Korozda guildmage} was not only covered in paint that accented the
veins visible through her translucent skin, but she also wore a
necklace of bones.  Vraska knew the symbolism behind the guildmage's
dress, but it still frightened her the way veins of life and remnants
of death could be enshrined on one's body.  "Let me introduce myself.
I am Janerris Strifetamer.  Now enough of the formalities!  I am sure
you are hungry.  Thank Svogthir that we have such a {bountiful
harvest} to enjoy.  Marward, the {arbor elf} here, brought down a
flinthoof boar earlier today, and it has been roasting for the better
part of the evening along with the axebane stags that Belian, Graril,
and Beldak killed this afternoon."
Soon, the entire company was feasting on the tender meat.  Even
Cru, Myc's rather large pet, finally settled down with a stag's bone
clenched in his teeth.  During the meal, Vraska learned the names of
each memeber of the party, and she developed a kindred spirit with the
three elves of deep shadow.  The Silhana elves had been cast out of
their hoes for not following the call of the conclave.  Fortunately,
their friendship with a young Myczil Savod Zunich helped them find a
place following {Jarad's orders} instead of an early grave in the
{swamp}.  As the evening wore on and the fire died down to just enough
coals to keep the party warm, Janerris began to chant.  Her praises of
life and death were so soothing that soon the only warrior awake was
Gracestina, one of the elves of deep shadow, who was taking the first
watch.

Vraska awoke just after dawn to the savory scent of a hot
breakfast.  The four {Golgari decoy}s had risen before dawn for their
turn to hunt.  They were rewarded with a glimmerpoint stag and several
runewing's eggs which when cooked over-easy taste like the fruit of a
mango tree.
After the meal, the {spire tracer}s buried the fire, and Jarad
gave everyone the coordinates for the location of their evening camp.
He ordered Thererrs' sister Fhaatra Huntinghawk, Marward Silentread,
and Zanben Many-Daggers to accompany Myczil and Vraska on a
reconnaissance mission while he and the rest of the company hunted
down a keymaster rogue who had caused a little too much trouble on the
southern side of Ravnica.
Soon Myc and Vraska were on their way.  Their little band of
warriors trooped behind them, and Cru refused to leave Myc's side,
making it harder to maneuver through the early morning {fog}.  Vraska
carried the {chromatic lantern} but did not light it to keep from
attracting too much attention.  The only sound that could be heard
echoing through the forest was the steady pounding of a woodpecker
like a {clock of omens} ticking in the distance.  Vraska was glad when
she could no longer hear the ominous sound of the woodpecker, but
Jarad's party knew something was about to happen.  The {elvish
archdruid}, Lord Wilian Hollysword, halted in his tracks, raised his
arms toward the sky, and began to speak.
"Tick, tick, tock.  Tick, tick, tock.  Time ever ticks onward.
Those near the clock don't hear it anymore, but their every movement
is in time with it's ticking."  As these words resounded in the ears
of his listeners, his close friend Leoril the Thunderer, the {death
rite shaman}, began to chant.  Jarad knew his son was in danger and
led his men back toward the previous night's camp hoping to be able to
track Myczil down before it was too late.  Lord Wilian, Leoril, and
Janerris stayed where they were, yet their words could still be heard
clearly in the troupe's sub-conscience.
Suddenly, Cru bounded off into the {fog} as trumpets blared in
the silence.  A battalion of scab-clan chargers appeared seemingly out
of nowhere.  A shrill yelp guided Jarad and his warriors the last few
feet to the battle, but they were too late to save the faithful
mossdog.  His head was already being displayed as a trophy on the lead
centaur's spear.  There was no time to mourn Crulannan's death as the
centaurs were already ganging up on the newcomers.
Myc pulled his sword out of its sheath and handed it to Vraska as
he yanked a dagger out of its hiding place in his boot.  Now even
Vraska could hear the chanting in her sub-conscience, and Lord
Wilian's voice began to prophesy just for her.
"The ancient scrolls say, 'So we fix our eyes not on what is
seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what
is unseen is eternal.'  Do not look at the trouble around you, Vraska.
Look inside of you, for what is inside of you is the spirit of the
things legends are made of.  It is the spirit of the Unseen One."
With these words reverberating all around her, Vraska took up the
sword as new life rushed through her gorgon veins.  She charged toward
the lead centaur, cutting him off at the knees.  As she hovered above
him ready to plunge her sword in his heart, he shrieked, "Who are
you?"
Her reply was simple.  "I am the Unseen One.  I am {Vraska the Unseen}."

Story

Among the  {Swamp}s and  {Island}s of Ravnica which happen to be the sewer system, there is a gate. This gate leads to a world of spies and espionage, lies and secrets. But one secret is the most important, it has been hidden by these spies called the House Dimir behind their sewer gate. The  {Dimir Guildgate} is a strongly guarded entrance. Anyone who gets through is dead on the other side. This is the story of The Dimir.
A long time ago, I was on my way to see the Golgari. This was during the great Izzet/Golgari War. I somehow got lost in the sluice ways and found myself at a door. This was no ordinary door. It was a gate. It was illuminated with light from an unknown source. I looked around to see if there is any way else to go, but the way I had had come from seemed to be gone. "Well, this is strange" I thought to myself.
I looked above the door to see a sign. It was labeled "Pricinct Seven of ..". The rest of the sign was cut off. I ventured through the gate into the dark unknown. At a point I felt like I was {Breaking//Entering}, but it seemed as though no one occupied the space.
I walked on for a long while to find another large room with a gate that looked very similar.
However the sign said "Precinct Six". I walked down the hall with ought a thought. As I was debating why I, as a spy at heart, was helping the Izzet; a zombie ambushed me from behind. I cast a {Fog Bank} to confuse this {Wight of Precinct Six} to run farther down the tunnel.
I walked down the tunnels until I reached "Precinct One: Duskmantle". At the door were 4 wizards. They were the {Duskmantle Guildmage}s. They saw me and quickly got up to cast a spell. I countered their measly attempts and {Mind Sculpt}ed them all to end them. From the remnants of their memories, I found that this was the location of the House Dimir.a very mysterious guild. They also feared the contents of Precinct One so much that they erased it from their minds. All they remembered was that one must never go in. I thought to myself "Oh, why not." And walked right in.
As I stepped into the Hall of Duskmantle, I heated a loud, slow clap. A man (at least I think it was) was standing at the other end of a large oval room. He said in a loud yet raspy voice. "Congratulations, you passed all the tests. " "What do you mean"
"This whole time you have been here, it was a test. I thought you had realized that. I truly thought you were smarter than that. Maybe I should reconsider my choice."
"Oh, so you were expecting me?"
"Yes."
"What do you want me for. I am quite powerful and could find out myself. I might just see into your mind to find out."
"Yes I'm aware of this ability of yours. But you won't be able to use it on me."
"Oh, you don't say."
I tried to see into his mind, but it was too clouded with secrets and lies, I could see his true self. I then wondered if this man knew who he was himself. I suddenly recall a report from Ral I ignored a long time ago. "{Lazav, Dimir Mastermind} found to be new Dimir Guild leader." Of course, since it was from the Dimir, it was a year or so late.
I told him. "You're Lazav."
"Very good, sir. And you are Jace? {Jace, the Memory Adept}?
I ignored his question.
"Why am I here?"
"You're a spy. Why join the Izzet?"
"Yes. I know, but why put me through tests?"
"Because only the best of the best deserve to become part of the Top Council."
"What?"
"The Top Council is a group of Dimir agents that make all the decisions for the Dimir."
"Who does this consist of?
"Hundreds of people."
"Where are they?"
"In this room"
Suddely, light flooded the room. I spun around to find the largest monster I'd ever seen.
"This is the {Consuming Aberrition}" said Lazav
"I feed it the consciousnesses of all the best and brightest. You, Jace, are the brightest of them all. Today, you will join the Top Council of the Aberrition."
The beast darted quickly across the room to Lazav. I got a good look into their identical eyes that are often hidden.
"Sick him"
I cast 4 Phantasms ({Jace's Phantasm}) for defense and some Fog Banks.
I said amidst the commotion; "Well that is some way to treat family. Feeding them consciousnesses of others to make them your pet."
The commotion stopped immediately.
"How... How do you know" Lazav stammered.
"Oh, logic, 2+2=4. You both have the same eyes. You share a familial relationship. Maybe even a clone."
"Well, as you know, I'm a shapeshifter. My brother shared this trait. He somewhat got stuck as this."
"I know your pain. I'm so sorry." I said. I thought quickly "How about this, I exchange this secret for my life."
Lazav thought a long while "Fine"
"And to make sure you don't cast {Deat's Approach} on me on the way out." I cast {Mind Grind} on them both an they collapse to the ground.
Befor Lazav passed out, I said "I'll contact you soon."
So, Lazav had {Pilferd Plans},I found out a juicy secret, didn't get incorporated into a Hive Mind, and I restarted my spy career. I would say today was a good day.

Your welcome, and you really did do an amazing job.  You took the concept in a really cool direction.  You did great, you deserve it, have fun, punch a squirrel, and eat an old lady. :)
hopefuly the squirrel is konker. He's annoying

have fun, punch a squirrel, and eat an old lady. :)

Maybe add a walk along the beach and poking dead things with a stick and that sounds fun!

Thanks for making the contest. It was fun to write a story. Thanks for this opportunity. If I would've known you would postpone it, I would've worked o. It more, but oh well.

Unstickied. Congrats to Mrs N. for her well earned victory! And a sincere thank you to White for making and supporting this contest! Karma prizes from me for both of you ;)

And a great job to everyone else who participated! I hope to see a contest like this again some day - and when that day comes, pm me and I'll help set up with stickying and stuff, and toss in some janky prizes :P

Yup whitedrake, you've become the contest guy for fun stuff now.

Thanks for coming up with this, and prepare for the flooding of your indox with contest ideas...  I am very sorry.

Mabye next time we should try to do this, but with a modern deck.

Just like to say since I didn't get a chance to vote I liked Flicker's story of two knights most. All stories were excellent but this one brought the biggest smile when the angel turns and said "KILL THEM ALL!"

Mhmmm you had almost one week to vote. I guess it is enough time to read and process the quality of any story... I guess you only had not noticed the contest until yesterday...:D

Yeah I don't usually go into the "fun stuff section" and I most often time don't check stickies articles as they are usually help and FAQ
