Title: Extort Question
Post by: Rozwellite on May 27, 2013, 05:07:03 PM
I have a question about extort. Lets say I cast a spell and extort is then put on the stack. If the creature that had extort is killed, will the extort still process on the stack or will it disappear cause the creature is no longer in play?

112.3b (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=112.3b): Activated abilities have a cost and an effect. They are written as "[Cost]: [Effect.] [Activation instructions (if any).]" A player may activate such an ability whenever he or she has priority. Doing so puts it on the stack, where it remains until it's countered, it resolves, or it otherwise leaves the stack. See rule 602, "Activating Activated Abilities."

Simply put, yes, your ability will resolve even if your creature is destroyed, unless the ability itself is countered.

RESOLVED

To elaborate, in case it helps you visualize for better understanding, once something is on the stack, it's source no longer matters. If I throw a rock at you, and am immediately struck by lightning, shot, and hit by a car, it won't change the fact the rock I threw is still in the air coming at you.

Extort is a trigger isn't it?

No, it's an activated ability because you have to pay a cost to use it.

702.99 Extort is a triggered ability. "Extort" means "Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay {W/B}. If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain life equal to the total life lost this way."

It is a trigger, I stand corrected.

I need to stop wearing that super-magnet underwear. I always have a bad day.

Unfortunately, I already +1 you for the other comment, so I can't do it for the new one
