Title: Black Zombie Deck
Post by: WeathermanKarlos on October 18, 2011, 11:29:02 PM
Hi everyone. I'm relatively new to magic, so any advice you can give me would be great. This is the deck I've been working on so far:

23X Swamp

4X Diregraf Ghoul
4X Walking Corpse
4X Cemetery Reaper
3X Skinrender
3X Vengeful Pharaoh
2X Geth, Lord of the Vault

4X Call to the Grave
3X Endless Ranks of the Dead
3X Nim Deathmantle
2X Caged Sun
4X Ghoulcaller's Chant
1X Army of the Damned

So far I have stayed away from blue because I haven't decided whether I like rooftop storm enough, and I dislike blue zombies needing to exile creatures which I could be making into more zombies.  That doesn't mean I am not willing to try blue, however.

Finally, I've thought about cards like Grimoire of the Dead and Army of the Damned, but wasn't sure if I needed any of them.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

This is a pretty good Zombie deck. I would add more Skinrenders and maybe a Ghoulraiser. I like Ghoulcaller's Chant as well.

Moan of the Unhallowed and Army of the Damned seem good.

Army of the dammed is good maybe just 1 or 2 as your finish card but I would take it out against any red deck that play pyro or slagstorm

Thanks for the advice.  I was thinking about removing 1 swamp, 1 Endless Ranks of the Dead, 1 Caged Sun, and 2 Decimator Webs.

Then I would put in 4 Ghoulcaller's Chants, mainly with the purpose of saving Cemetery Reaper and reusing Skinrender, and I would also add 1 Army of the Damned.

Does that sound good, or should I change this?  Thanks.

Grave titan

I have actually thought about Grave Titan since it is an awesome card, but I have to get a Nim Deathmantle out first, so if I don't or it gets destroyed then he is pretty much dead thanks to Call to the Grave.  Is it worth the risk?

In my opinion yea just for his ability personally I put hexproofing cards in my deck to keep him alive

Yeah I might put one in because you're right about his ability being good.  The only problem is that hexproofing wouldn't save him because Call to the Grave is an enchantment that I control and it's not targeting anything anyways.

Oh well, he's probably worth it.

He's strong with a good ability

Also, find a better two-drop. {Walking Corpse} just sucks. I've playtested it.

Ok I agree Walking Corpse is useless but I don't know of any other zombies for 2 mana to take it's place.
Any suggestions?

Depending on the format, {Withered Wretch} is functional. Especially with the gy interaction in Innistrad.

Ok, but I don't see how that would help, since I want to turn their creatures into zombies and bring mine back. How would it benefit me? Sorry, but I honestly don't understand.

What about {Grimoire of the Dead}?

Well, Weatherman, the wretch is a 2/2 for 2cc that can get rid of problems like flashback cards and is strictly better as a two drop than {Walking Corpse}.  I don't actually see any cards in your list that are bringing anything back from your graveyard except the {Vengeful Pharaoh}, and he basically brings himself back.

Ok I see your point at the very least he gives me a little more to work with and can't hurt. Thanks for the advice.

As for grimoire of the dead, it is pretty good, but I already have four cemetery reapers. Do I really need it?

Cemetery reapers exiles creatures to give you zombies. The Grimoire actually gives you ALL THE CREATURES!!  W00t!!  (sorry for yelling, but I do like this card:). )

I forgot to ask, is this deck supposed to be Standard?  If not, I would recommend you take a look at the Undead Archenemy deck or Zombie Planechase decks. If you can get them for a decent price, Zombie Apocolypse has a ton of great Zombie cards. Otherwise, just look up the decklists to see whats in it.

Yeah I'm just playing a standard deck.  I might get a Grimoire of the Dead, but I don't know how well it will work with my Cemetery Reapers. Maybe just avoid exiling anybody strong.

Oh and by the way, I had already changed my original design a little, so I just went ahead and updated the deck list.

I was thinking more about replacing Walking Corpse, and I was contemplating switching them with 4 Leaden Myrs.

They would die once I get out Call to the Grave, but they would help my deck get started, and I could always turn them into tokens later.

What do you think?

I think that's a solid idea. You can ramp your mana and power out your other zombies, by the time you get to the {Call to the Grave} they usually aren't relevant anymore.

Great, thanks for the advice, I will definitely test it out.

Now, however, im also thinking about using Null Champion instead, who  would be usefall later in the game.
Opinions?

I'm not really a fan of {Null Champion}, but he might be okay.  He's good in slower games, but 3 to level is pretty steep.

Well either way I just got 3 Death Barons, which definitely changes things. Vengeful Pharaoh doesn't seem as good, while Abattoir Ghoul could be really useful. What do you suggest?

++ {Death Barons}!  :D  I think {Vengeful Pharaoh} is an interesting card, but I might only add one for interest sake.  Not much sense in drawing more if you already have one in your gy.

Can you post all of the changes so far, so we can see what the deck looks like now?  You know that you can add the deck from DeckBuilder on the app, right?

True. Also I don't know how to add my deck, just to update the one I already posted. How do I do that?

You can add a deck by recreating it in the deck builder then posting it again. And you might cosider putting in a {Vampire Nighthawk} or two. Even though they are out of theme you could use them to block and destroy enemy flying cards.

Wait, is this supposed to be standard or casual? {Null Champion}s rotated out.

You should check the Zombie primer over at MTGS - lots of great stuff.

This is really just a casual deck, but I have mostly new cards because I haven't been playing too long.

Also, I made my made my deck in deck builder, I'm just not sure... how to post it.

Finally, my main questions right now are which is better; Skinrenders or Abattoir Ghouls (since they will be more useful with deathtouch from Death Baron).
Also, am I ok to remove the Nim Deathmantles? They seem useful but not necessary.

I had a zombie token deck. {grimoire of the dead} I thought would be useful but it really doesn't work unless you can destroy your opponents creatures and avoid exiling if at all possible. I ran my deck with 4 {Diabolic tutor} 2 {rune scarred demon} 2{grave Titan}. If you want grimoire to work you need to discard the {rune scarred demon}'s and the {grave titan}'s. That way they come into play as zombies as well and they are pretty big to boot. Also {endless ranks of the dead} is pretty friggin awesome. I love that card you just have to be sure you remember to put the zombies out each upkeep. {call to the grave} is especially good since your creatures are all zombies and odds are your opponents aren't. I had a lot of fun with this deck
