Clash of Clans (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/clash-of-clans/id529479190?mt=8&uo=4&at=10l74t) is probably the best iOS game I've played. Get it from App Store, it is lots of fun for both aggressive and peaceful players.
The iMtG clan is called iMtG, we are 5th level and you are welcome to join*.
The game is free with optional IAPs**, a bit like iMtG. I've played a number of freemium games and some really suck at being too pushy with asking for your money, this one is done right.
* We had an influx of random people so I closed the clan and it is Invite Only, but mention Gathering or iMtG in your join request and you will be accepted.

From what I understand the price paid for 'next battle' is linked to TH level and it is best to avoid upgrading TH for as long as possible. I'm paying 170 at 5 and the guy who's the clan leader (my cousin) at 8 pays 560 O.o

Yeah, I'm upgrading my defenses. 170 gold is good for the trade off of finding the inactives with 100k gold in their mines ripe for the taking :D I don't have enough walls to cover my base though :(

Another piece of advice from the clan leader I got, is to stay low with trophies. Before 'going to sleep' go and quickly surrender a few attacks, that will lower your trophies and hopefully reduce the number of powerful attackers overnight.

I just throw my TH outside the walls. There's usually some low level guy who will bite and give me a free shield. With my current base I haven't lost more than 30k in resources despite having both storages 3/4ths full.
I got my brother playing again, he's a LVL 8 TH, I forgot he played this game until I showed him, he tried to get me playing it a few months ago. He said he might join the Clan once I get in.

TH6 is 250 per next battle.
It helps a lot to have maximum builders.
The game is really good :D
I use this strategy to attack: 6 wall breakers + 18 giants + 33 goblins. Sometimes the numbers are not exactly this. I would send the giants first to cover the approach of wall breakers, which I send immediately after. Sometimes breakers get shot by archer towers before they reach the walls, thats why giants go first. Then I let the giants roam a bit, take a couple of defenses and then I start sending the goblins in. Timing of goblins is crucial, sometimes you would send them in waves sometimes in one go. Say if the defenses are very strong I would send the first small wave to clear the nearest mines then send the rest of the goblins in when theres a clear patch to the treasure, before giants die. Defenses will keep firing on giants while the horde of goblins will loot the treasure.
Be very careful not to send goblins under wizard or mortar fire, they will die very quickly. Send them in when wizards and mortars are firing at giants. When walls are weak I would sometimes send all goblins in one go, and before all giants are dead the goblins will loot everything and help the giants finish the defenses off.

They can steal a portion of your gold and elixir (and eventually dark elixir). By destroying everything they simply get more trophies.
Ok, so it's safe to invest in gems then. As they cost real monies, I was thinking if I did that early, I can get the multipliers when I complete one of the tasks on the side and effectively make it more beneficial. Would this be a safe bet?
The safest place to spend your gems is on builders. Especially early on.
Yeah I haven't even finished the campaign thing, just continually upgrading my mines and elixir fountain things.

The Campaign will take some time, the levels get pretty brutal, and the payoff isn't worth it after a certain point tbh 😄

Because I thought it was the best app on the market for everything it does, because I dont mind sending $10 to an independent app developer, but i do have second thoughts about pumping money into big corporations, and because I wanted all the pluses to buying all the power ups.

In defence, show strength where you are weak, and the other way round. Play your traps accordingly.
You can get 450 gems when you reach 1250 trophies. That will almost buy you a builder hut.

Thus granting the next attacker a chance, because we are still unshielded.
At our stage it is not a good thing, as all it greatly increases the chance of being owned by someone with enough firepower to *** our base and take everything.
Traps are very important in defence, but they are one-offs. Every attack diminishes your traps, making the chance of getting owned higher and higher.
Traps are therefore best used to stop your enemy after they already destroyed the Town Hall.
Losing your Town Hall grants you 12 hour shield which is worth approximately 25 green gems. It costs you 1000 elixir and 1000 gold.
The most successful defence is when the attacker manages to destroy Town Hall but nothing else.
Check my base as an example of this defence tactic.

Good base for TH6. You don't need to wall in those mines/pumps unless your farming or inactive, looking at your base you are not farming;). Doing good, get those level 4 walls to five and you can pretty much upgrade your th. I recommend you farm to get the gold, do a giant(4-10), 20 archers and 20 barbs, goblins some wall breakers, and you could also throw your th outside and put clan castle in the middle. I also recommend you stay at the range of 1000-1200 trohpies, that is the best for th 6-8. Hope that helps:)
