Quick question, when turning a key rune into a creature can that trigger evolve?

I'm afraid not. It does not count as a creature entering the battlefield. All it does is change what the current card is (from an artifact to a creature). No etb effects will trigger.

What if you turn it into a creature the same turn you play it? No, wait...that doesn't sound like it would work

Nope, it still doesn't re-enter the battlefield just because it turned into a creature. All it does is change what the card is (artifact to land), no zone changes.
