Title: Varolz the Scar-Striped, scavenge
Post by: Mikefrompluto on April 17, 2013, 10:47:31 PM
We don't have official rulings yet, but maybe one of The Rules Gurus can answer this. {Varolz, the Scar-Striped} gives each creature in the GY scavenge. What happens if a creature already has scavenge? Would I get the option to pay {1}{B}{G} to scavenge a {Dreg Mangler} or would I have to pay his original scavenge cost of {3}{B}{G}?

I think it's safe to assume it works the same way as {Sedris, the Traitor King} does when there's a creature that already has unearth in your graveyard. In that case, you get to choose which one to activate. It doesn't replace their existing ability, just adds it on as an option.

I agree that sounds right,

I wouldn't call myself a guru, but I think you have the option of either, kinda like multiple {joraga treespeaker}s fully leveled, they get that ability but don't have to use it

Just looked this up in an outside source. The above is correct.

Not to be redundant but it's the same thing as snapcastering a spell like {think twice} you choose either to pay three or two

This is an important concept in magic. Effects that change the functionallity of a card should be thought of as changing the origional text. For example {dual casting} adds to the card meaning {illusionist bracers} can dupe that ability. Multiple instances of non redundant abilitys (lifelink, deathtouch, etc are redundant) will stack and no matter how unimportant it may seem it is good to keep in mind incase a card is printed or discovered that makes use of that knowledge. What comes to mind is  {Stifle} and  {Linvala, Keeper of Silence}. Stifle hits a single ability which is relevant when a triggered ability is triggered by you activating a different ability on the same card. Linvala more so because {dualcasting}'s ability cant be used because the creature actually has the ability.
