Title: Larva combos
Post by: Birdbrain on April 12, 2013, 07:59:07 PM
What are some combos you guys can think of for {cosmic larva}

I think his effect might have some wacky combo potential

Other than {fast bond} and {curcible of worlds}

lol. Ok, that's a little more blunt than I was working for, but definitely works. Anybody think of anything wacky that goes with this? Maybe something that triggers when lands hit the graveyard? Or your sac a permanent/land? Or that care about the number of lands in the graveyard?

{deathrite shaman} can use its effect, {assault strobe} & {fling} synergize, {miming slime} then {fling} the original

Or drop {fervor}, play {cosmic larva} and keep using {unsummon} to bounce it back to your hand to recast at will.

I have two of these as well, I feel the same as you, SOMETHING must combo with it!

Ok, cool. Any other cards that can make this one card bizzare? Other than {fling}. I get it, use his power against opponent. But how can I turn its effect to my advantage besides {death rite shaman}?

 {Azusa, Lost but Seeking} + {Crucible of Worlds} essentially negates the larvas effect... Don't know anything that would turn it in your favor though!

You could {bazaar trader} it or something then nerf its power/ability to attack? Idk how youd guarantee it stay on their field but you could do it. {agoraphobia} it {bazaar trader} it then find a way to keep it alive

Only thing I can think of is {Isocron Scepter} imprinted with {Stifle} or {Trickbind}. Counter it's sacrifice ability for a measly 2 mana/turn is a pretty reasonable cost for a 3-mana 7/6 trample, no?

And yeah, giving it haste somehow would be a huge plus.

Ok cool. Though I'm not talking about canceling its ability. I want to use it in a wacky combo

It took some digging, but I found some decent cards that work off having land in the graveyard. {Forgotten Harvest} can turn a land into a buff every turn, {Genju of the Spires} can be a decently strong creature for 3 mana each turn, {Harvest Wurm} is a fairly costed creature that you shouldn't have a problem summoning, {Planar Birth} could set you up for a big X burn spell, and {Terravore} could become pretty big. Lastly, I think {Akki Raider} would be a nice addition.

Oh, and I strongly discourage this, but {Knight of the Reliquary} works off land in the grave. Really not for a red deck though, so it'd be pretty bad.

i was going to put it in a red/ green deck. Or my naya zoo once I get the cards for it. And thanks. Do you happen to have any of these cards?

No problem! Unfortunately, I do not have these cards. If I did, I'd send them your way.

Just thought of {Mimic Vat}. Have it sac itself and add it to the vat, and you have yourself a nice little toy!

well. I suppose I should have expected lots of combos that try to negate his effect instead of harness it. Lol

There really aren't any ways to make losing your own lands beneficial to you. Aside from minor cantrips like {Deathrite Shaman}'s ability, sacrificing your land is only going to hurt you, and hurt you bad.

{fast bond} + {crucible of worlds} + that one card were you sac a land to gain 3 life...

Edit: {overgrown estate}

What were you saying now gorzo?
Title: Re: Larva combos
Post by: Gorzo on April 16, 2013, 07:36:14 AM
I think you're missing the gist of what I meant ;)

{Fastbond} is banned is essentially every format because of how easily it abuses everything to absurd proportions. There are lots of combos for Fastbond, and {Crucible of Worlds} has many combo pieces as well. But it's the ease of use, wording, and way that they do what they do that make them so versitile and powerful. A card ability like the once-per-turn-at-a-specific-time-with-unchangable-perimeters-and-an-effect-that-by-itself-accomplishes-nothing-but-self-detriment on {Cosmic Larva} can't become a Johnny card because anyone wills it to - I'm sure there are a couple great synergies, and maybe a combo or two for it, but any powerful combos involving sacrificing lands or creatures have much more reliable and efficient options.

I guess that's true. Though an awesome synergy may exist. It would be like going to a big city, and expect to find an alien space ship shooting banana cream pies at everyone, while a hoard of gremlins jumps over a green and blue moon to find it. Right?

I would LOVE an alien space ship shooting cream pies.

true. So I guess a deck around it would be Jund colored
