Title: What deck?
Post by: Crapshooter on April 11, 2013, 10:17:20 PM
LGS is doing modern this week. I just moved so I don't even have all my cards but I do have the option of green eldrazi or standard land destruction, but I don't know anything about modern meta game, suggestions on which to play would be awesome!

I would suggest Eldrazzi but only if you can ramp them fast.

I have a modern exalted deck that pops turn 4 so, keep that in mind.

a fast infect deck is pretty easy to do. also possible turn 3 or 4 wins.

Almost all my cards are in shipping, won't see them for a while. The decks I have I brought with me or built with new set.

If you can dump  {Emrakul, the Aeons Torn} turn 5 you should be fine, I'd have a fog to play just in case.

Have it in side board

Affinity...;) or Modern combo elves...;) The second one is quite cheap.

I love Elves! Lately my deck of choice table top is a modern combo elf using mana ramps to just vomit your hand, Yeva  {Yeva, Nature's Herald} giving everything flash and  {Nissa Revane} for life gain, dropping Khalni  {Khalni Hydra} turn 2/3. People just look at me depressed, especially since my next drop is Primalcrux  {Primalcrux}. Turn 4 I'm dealing lethal damage. The Khalni/Primalcrux combo is just mean... Turn 4 your almost guaranteed a 13/13 Primal at least.

No one likes me when we play tabletop with that deck.

Mostly it is played a little different way but your build has definitely its own charm...;)

I play for fun so I rarely play that deck.

Hehe and he is not cheap??? :D :D

Edit: Mhmm but anyway even with playset of him u would be able to make infect for less than 350$... Jund or Zoo would cost at least double...;) maybe triple... If you would want to have it serious competetive...

That's what I was getting at haha.  Seems like the only expensive card for infect, though.

Yeah depends on build people play fetches and shocks in infect. They are not exactly for free either...;) But of course you can pilot it without fetches...

Ahhh, stupid mana base.  Always stupid expensive :P
Title: Re: What deck?
Post by: whitedrake on April 12, 2013, 05:28:04 PM
Yeah yeah... That's the price of being competitive...:D the cheapest builds are mono-coloured or artifact based decks... Eggs, Affinity...

I'm sure you could make a really competitive zoo deck without the one that cares about card types in your graveyard. You just need the right replacement

Unfortunately, it's not easy to replace {Tarmogoyf} :P. He's kid of a big deal haha

its not easy, but also not impossible. I'm going to pull it off somehow! Once I get a stable land base from something other than {ancient ziggurat}

{Tarmogoyf} isn't a big deal, there are so many other cards with similar if not better abilities. I don't understand the hype behind it.

Mhmm maybe you can replace him by  {Quirion Dryad} but as I said in different thread there is no way how to effectively replace fetches..;)

That big deal about him is that he mostly hits the battlefield as 3/4 t2-3... Thats something you will not accomplish that easily...

And for example in Jund there is no way how to replace him... And with all spot removals dryad would die bfr it would become strong enough...

though look at the card...it's one of those "see into the future" type things they might print later; and sense it was so popular...possible reprint, possible drop in price to like 80$ or even 50$

He will be in limited reprint (Modern Masters) but no way that he would drop that much...;) definitely not to 50$...

Mhmm you must play shocks in zoo anyway there is not much space for alternatives...

i realize that, and planning on picking some up when dragons maze reprints them, dropping the price

as for replacements. I have a good feeling about Theros. Being Greek themed, we might get the amazoness creature type. They seem very {R}{G} so I might be able to find some replacements there

Edit: {leather back baloth} might be a good replacement if you can get the mana base for it
And I have 3. Anyone want to trade me the forth please?

it comes close. Sure {tarmoghoyf} can become a 5/6 or 6/7. But is vulnerable to stuff that exiles stuff from the graveyard

Or {reminisce}. That card totally hoses him

Edit: never mind. It doesnt
Title: Re: What deck?
Post by: MisterJH on April 12, 2013, 07:08:51 PM
It does NOT come close, hence the $115 difference in price ;)
Title: Re: What deck?
Post by: Birdbrain on April 12, 2013, 07:17:47 PM
Actually, never mind. If your careful about what goes into your graveyard, {reminisce} does hose him

Edit: I've actuAly thought of several more ways to hose him sense that post. So I'm sticking with the baloth
Title: Re: What deck?
Post by: MisterJH on April 12, 2013, 07:40:49 PM
But how often is someone going to run {reminisce} only to hose a tarmoghoyf? And who is watching what goes into their GY? For every problem, there is an answer. The thing about le ghoyf is he drops for 2, is not color taxing, and is usually a VERY big problem, which needs an answer
Title: Re: What deck?
Post by: Silent1236 on April 12, 2013, 07:47:12 PM
{Reminisce} is bad juju.  Goyf still gets a boost from your GY and your opponent gets to replay those fetches, {Abrupt Decay}s, {Liliana of the Veil}s, etc.  Not really a hose IMO

{reminisce} isn't the only awnser I thought of. I've thought of several. And for more awnsers, look in the blocks before and after it came out, an even during. Wizards makes awnsers for everything in there games. His awnser just hasn't woken up yet

Any removal spell?  {Rest In Peace}?  Goyf is just as squishy as any vanilla card; no hexproof/shroud/indestructible.  Everything has an answer, but that answer doesn't matter if goyf kills you before you hit him with it.

true
