Title: Spells durning upkeep and draw step
Post by: SoshiGanrou on April 02, 2013, 02:15:26 AM
Ok. I've searched the threads and rules for the answer and either I suck at searching or just have up too soon but can you play spells durning your upkeep or draw step? I was informed that you couldn't durning up keep but could before the draw... I'm just confused and would like to know. Thanks :)

You can during the upkeep before the draw.

From the Comprehensive Rules:

503. Upkeep Step

503.1. First, any abilities that trigger at the beginning of the upkeep step and any abilities that triggered during the turn's untap step go on the stack. (See rule 603, "Handling Triggered Abilities.")

503.2. Second, the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities.

Furthermore. In the same part of the rules:

504. Draw Step

504.1. First, the active player draws a card. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack.

504.2. Second, any abilities that trigger at the beginning of the draw step and any other abilities that have triggered go on the stack.

504.3. Third, the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities.

So, in the Draw step, after the active player has drawn a card and after the activated abilities have triggered, the players can cast spells and activate abilities too, not only in the upkeep.

Best,
