Title: MY BROTHERS I NEED HELP!
Post by: The Dude on April 01, 2013, 08:25:03 PM
I have a group of friends who likes my girlfriend like accepts her ya know but my friends style of humor is kinda mean so when we're hanging out they jokingly insult her or say something mean but we know its complete jokingly so how do I handle that situation because she gets upset sometimes that I don't stand up for her with them but she admits it doesn't bother her cause she knows they're joking. So at this point I'm just wondering what should I say that won't make a super awkward situation and please some realistic stuff :)

Had a similar situation with a buddy of mine. Just tell your friends to be a little more merciful with their comments, they'll understand. Not everyone is fit for that kind of humor, and if you just tell them to lay off a little, I'm sure they won't hesitate.

If you want some exact wording, just talk to your buddies and say something like, "Hey, my girlfriend likes hanging out with you guys and all, but she isn't quite used to our humor, and sometimes it hurts her feelings. If you could just be a bit lighter on the insults, it would be appreciated." And tell her something like, "Hey, I know it hurts your feelings sometimes, but its just our strange way of being comfortable around each other. I told them to lay off a bit, but if an insult or two slips out, try and not take it seriously."

Hope this helps!

If it doesn't bother her then it's no big deal. She wants you to stand up for her to all the guy-talk jokes, so make sure you do - when they dish out a doozy on her, make you A) make a comment to pick her up like "Dude, her butt isn't big, shut up ya moron," B) back her up by giving her ammo so she can dish the guy-talk right back to them (if Jim says your butt looks big, tell him at least it doesn't have gravitational pull like his mom's!"), C) retort as a way to stand up for her, or D) a combination of the above.

Make sure you ask her first about what she wants of these before you do any of them.

Not always true. I'd just ask her how she'd like you to handle the situation in the future. It sounds like she is fine with your friends talking to her like "one of the guys", but she wants a little reassurance that you see her as more than that.
