Title: Lifelink vs. Sacced blocker
Post by: MementoMori on March 21, 2013, 02:20:16 PM
My opponent attacks with a lifelink creature. I block then sacrifice the blocker. Does my opponent gain life when combat damage is dealt?

It seems like an obvious "no," but combat damage can be tricky, so I'm just making sure.

Nope. 702.14b Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that source's controller, or its owner if it has no controller, to gain that much life (in addition to any other results that damage causes). See rule 119.3.
No damage dealt, no life gained.

To go along with that, and excerpt from the Comprehensive Rules:

510.1c A blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creatures blocking it. If no creatures are currently blocking it(if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage

My opponent attacks with a trample creature, I block and sac the blocker. Do I take the full brunt of the attack to the face?

If a creature with trample is assigned a blocker but the blocker is destroyed/exiled before damage is dealt the trampling creature will assign it's full power in damage to the defending player or planeswalker.

Yes. Trample is the exception to the above rule.

Edit: DC is on his game today! Beat me to it.

I don't generally jump into the rules forum, I am doing some research for the guide. I'm a method actor - like Daniel Day Lewis - gotta get in character. 😋

Sounds good! I'm gonna start typing up some simplified rules things, based on common problems I've seen.
