Title: Basic Lifelink Question
Post by: Harmon1c on February 15, 2012, 01:41:33 PM
Okay, my brother and his friend keep trying to convince me the other is wrong.

Situation: My {Wurmcoil Engine} is blocked by a generic 1/1. How much life do I gain?

6. It does all damage of the hit, and kills him. If the wurm got double strike, though, it wouldn't do damage on the second round of combat, because there is no target to receive its damage

I thought you only recieve life for damage given.  It only took one point of damage to kill it so you should only get one life

It took 6 points of damage. It was a single swing. It happens even though it would die with only one, unless we are talking about deathtouchers with multiple blockers. In that case, you can choose to assign only 1 damage point to the creature, and other amounts to other creature(s)

You're thinking of something akin to {Drain Life}.
Boy look at all THAT extra wording garbage.

It looks at the damage assigned to the other, you have assigned 6 damage to the target creature so that's how much life you gain. If you had multiple blockers (lets say 2 x 1/1) then you could still assign 3 each for a total of 6 damage. You deal 3 damage to each and its equal or greater that it's toughness so it dies. But you still did a total of 6 damage. Lifelink sees that and adds 6 life onto your life total.
