Title: Help with new deck!
Post by: ApexPredator on March 07, 2013, 05:01:49 AM
I want to start building a {Reaper King} EDH but not sure how to go about it. Besides scarecrows and changelings obviously. Never built a five-color edh. All suggestions are welcome.

All you basically need is lotsa scarecrows and mana fix. Since your commander isnt only color in the cost pure ramp would work too!
{Chromatic lantern} and some tutoring would work well.
I've always wanted to make an edh with him as commander

He is easier than most due to the option of casting him for colorless.

It would be easier to run mainly three colors. I would choose black and green for tutors and ramping respectively. Then just pick the color you like the most. IMO I was going to then just go with some crazy beat sticks.

So start by acquiring all the shocks {Krosan Verge} and ramp cards that allow you to search for them like {Farseek}. There are a bunch of good and cheap spells that allow you to search for "forests" which in turn can let you put into play your shock lands.

There's a cycle of "if you control a (color) permanent, this creature has (ability)" scarecrows, which work well with a five color commander

Ramp is definitely a good way to go about getting your mana fixed. There are other cards to help you out though. {Abundant Growth}, {Alloy Myr}, {Birds of Paradise}, {Coalition Relic}, {Command Tower}, {Darksteel Ingot}, {Divergent Growth}, {Druids' Repository}, {Joimer Adept}, {Manalith}, {Vessel of Endless Rest}, {Kaleidostone}, and {Crystal Quarry} are all good for keeping your mana in order. Once you have the mana, there are some cool cards that require all five mana to use. {Etched Monstrosity} has always been a favorite if mine, and any of the Bringers ({Bringer of the Black Dawn}, there's one for each color) might be a nice addition. There are cards like {Dragonsoul Knight} that turn into some pretty awesome creatures once you get the mana, and aren't hard to cast if you don't have it yet. {Legacy Weapon} is pretty awesome too. I also believe {Obelisk of Alara} deserves a mention. The most important thing, however, is what you want the deck to do. I gave some cool five color options, but having access to all colors means you can make whatever kind of deck you want (control, beatdown, combo, etc).

Edit: Forgot about the Vivid lands, like {Vivid Creek} or {Vivid Marsh}. They aren't my favorite, but they can help out with early game mana fixing, and afterward still useful as lands of their color.

I found the vivid lands particularly useful with the proliferate mechanic...

{mana reflections} is good, {mycosynth lattice} will help with mana fixing, and {realmwright} with {crypt ghast} is great for some ramp

{Conspiracy} is also an option. It lets you play different creature types, but still trigger {Reaper King} ability.
