Title: What to get
Post by: Fenster on March 02, 2013, 11:37:52 AM
Ok so i have had a terrible month moneywise and still havent got a single GC booster.
I really wanna play me some dimir so question is as follows: Do i get the Dimir machinations intro pack or a dimir guildpack? Or go a little bit out of budget and get a fatpack then trade me to dimir?

Well, the guild pack guarantees you a very nice {Consuming Aberration}, and one other random Dimir rare. No other useful Dimir cards are guaranteed. And 5 packs. The intro pack will offer the same (though non foil) insect, plus a non-random Dimir rare (no idea which one). You also get a deck of Dimir cards, at least some of which are sure to be useful. But 3 fewer booster packs.

The good news is that Dimir cards are mostly pretty cheap. Any decent pulls you get can easily be traded for them, if Dimir is all you have your sights set on.

What would you recommend then?

If you have an idea of the deck your making. I'd suggest make a list and see if you can just buy the singles you need to build it. If your working on a budget see what it will cost and maybe just buy the cards. But to me I enjoy opening packs. So I would say go in on a box with some friends to get the best pack per dollar

I got one of these intro guild  packs for the purpose of the aberration itself, one rare I didn't get in a box of GTC, for my Lazav EDH deck.

At first I almost had buyers remorse ($15) with the fact that I also got a  {Gruul Ragebeast} and  {Assemble the Legion} in the packs that came with it, it's annoying to get cards that will totally not go with the prebuilt deck, but then i thought those rares weren't that bad. After going thru the deck it was totally worth it to spend the extra $5 rather than get a $10 duel deck booster (I was at Tarjay). The  {Jace's Phantasm} and  {Paranoid Delusions} combo came in this pack as well; pair those two cards with Lazav and the aberration for a great standard Dimir combo.

Most stores I see sell packs for 3.50+ so you could get 4/maybe 5 packs for the same price as a deck, guaranteed foil rare(useful IMO if you like Dimir) and 2 booster packs.

If you have a deck mainly constructed already with just a few extras to add, then singles may serve you best, but we all know that fix of opening packs.

If you can afford a box and know that you can lower your cost by sharing it with a friend, you both can pull equivalent values and keep your favorites.

If you want a cheap Dimir list after you trade, search "Ajemancinnajob budget dimir" on youtube.
